Could I have a few people test the response times to a couple of websites. (especially non-european).

I mainly want to see how 1and1 and fasthosts perform for posters outside of Europe.

DOS prompt: tracert www.oneandone.co.uk

Looks like it's got some strange problem getting out of Iowa.

The worst slowdown is, understandably, the international link. Inside the respective countries not much slowdown to be seen.

Conclusion: (at least today) it doesn't seem like too much of a difference from regular Counterglow speeds or each other.

Sorry, would, but all my tracerouts r belong to us. Or at least some router in LA which won't let the trace through.

Can't even ping Fasthosts, just get timeouts. Ping times of ~350ms to oneandone.

www.oneandone.co.uk is unreachable by me. And has been since you first asked for tracert's to it. Not even pingable. Same for www.fasthosts.co.uk .

Now, I can reach their web presence, but not ping or tracert to them. Go figure.

You fried out your OLE then? or just your clipboard? Or forgotten that you need to access the COPY command through the little system box on the left of the CMD box?

Tried it DS, I've pulled stuff from the command prompt before, just now it doesn't fucking work! I can't copy a single thing from my damned command prompt, the clipboard works fine for everything except that one damned thing. I have no clue why. I'm not running repair on the damned OS to find out as then I have to reinstall all those updates which already f'ed some stuff up that I had to do some workarounds. The directx one was great... dropped all my bass - guns sounded like tin cans banging around - tried it with and without the audigy 2 (thus using soundstorm drivers from the mobo), still wouldn't work. So I already went through removing that, didn't work, so I had to restore to the earliest restore I had to get it back, then went back and installed the current D9 which doesn't need the fix (at least autoupdates didn't pop up telling me, and now everything is fine. Can't even use restore now since it crashed when created a damned restore point on the last update. I hate MS fixes.

Japan and several other asian nations have thrown in a good bit of money (japan at least put up 98 million) on their own copy of linux which they eventually plan to release - I hope it fucking works. No need to buy add-on's to get windows stuff to work and hardware to be recognized if it works as planned - also anyone can fix problems instead of waiting for MS to make half assed fixes. I hope as hell it does as I'm tired of MS fucking security patches fucking shit up, I might as well just get a few dozen damned viruses, at least I can remove those fuckers with little damage if any to my system.

LOL!

I've been having fun with MS at work as well. Friday, I had to rebuild my workstation. I managed to get all the security updates onto it without it going corrupt in NTFS.sys or something else vital. Fired up IE and discovered... IE wouldn't do little things like Open New Window, Save, Save As, Print, etc. Wouldn't follow any link that did not explicitly have a www.something.com/page.htm in it's URL...

Fun and games... ;)

It will be the same with Linux. Only with open source, if you are really pissed about something, you can go look at the source. 99.9999999% of the time, it won't do any good, but it might make you feel like you can do something. ;)

My only fuckup was sticking a few things on my boot drive which I should have stuck on the array. So if I wipe the drive to do a completely clean install, I have a lot more crap to go through and update, reinstall, etc. Not that I wouldn't have a lot of reinstalling to do anyhow, just that to do it now would basically mean a COMPLETE reinstall. Not something I'm looking forward to. I still have no Bass in one DirectX game, the rest are fine - well the bass is somewhat there, just not on the player - every other opponent and teammate has it that I can hear, just my m60 sounds like .22 in the game so it's kinda screwy, but at least everything else works, I can live with that - it's not worth a reinstall, though if I lose copy abilities from more than the command prompt, that could easily prove to be a pain in the ass prompting me to reinstall if a repair doesn't work as I can't system restore.

Well the governments of the asian area are developing it not to compete per say with MS, but so they can close holes when they find them and patch things when they find issues with them, not wait months on MS to do something. They also are planning on trying to integrate MS compatibility and PnP off the bat into it - they said they were going with the Linux Kernel instead of building from scratch. With all the CEO's of SCO having sold all their stock (now that it is valued high), I think that was their last chance to make a buck off a dying company, and they did - that was the purpose of the lawsuit, nothing more, nothing less. Just skirting SEC laws on trading there. What's new.

Darkstar
16-09-2003, 05:06:14
Well, China is into Linux because they know what they'd do if they had Microsoft, and presume that's what the USA is doing.

So... they want a Linux kernal with Windows peripherals? Doesn't sound like a well thought out plan.

Well to run software designed for an MS OS without having to generally jump through hoops to get it to run. Not saying running their software, but running software that isn't linux friendly that you usually have to load up a seperate client before loading whatever program without having to load the client - thus the software will run natively in the linuz enviroment without having to buy or find an add-on to allow it to run.
