View Full Version : Hosting for Next CG Year

For the last year Counterglow has been kindly hosted by Logicbox (Nav).

However due to bandwidth performance problems with the current provider, which have had a notable effect on site performance of late, Nav is switching to a new dedicated server provider. Unfortunately bandwidth limitations mean he cannot host the Counterglow next year.

So CG is in the hunt for a new host! Nav has prepared a word document (http://www.counterglow.com/upload/nav/cg_hosting.doc) containing the likely contenders (there aren't many!). I would appreciate your comments / ideas for other potential hosts. CG will have to move with the month.

Last years donations have been carried over to pay for most of the potential cost of the new hosting, however new donations would be most appreciated from those who haven't donated yet. Details about this will be posted soon.

Thanks for your time,
The Management

Would need to know the current bandwidth and webspace requirements to be able to judge. Fast Hosts looks the best of the three.

Incidently, why just those 3?

Oneandone, that's our old friend 1und1 isn't it?

‘Unlimited bandwidth’ makes me very suspicious.

Nav
11-09-2003, 14:39:29
We haven't exceeded 10gb for a few months now, however this year we peaked at almost 15gb, so something around 20gb would be safe.

Space wise I would think 1gb would be acceptable.

There aren't many hosts there because I just can't find any others that do appropriate packages.

However I would call them to sound out what they consider 'unreasonable usage'. I somehow doubt we'd fall into that category.

we're probably safe only on the bandwidth category, on everything else that's posted here I think we'll get kicked off within hours.. :D

What exactly is meant by "losing control" of the domain name?

Funkodrom
11-09-2003, 15:16:57
In that case the cheapest one looks like the bandwidth is too low.

Oneandone.co.uk looks best, despite being in Germany. It's cheaper for a start and has enough space and bandwidth.

Nav
11-09-2003, 15:16:58
host is in charge of billing as well as the nameservers. Basically the kind of situation that lead to the loss of counterglow.net. personally I would prefer not to lose that kind of control again.

Incidently I keep the domain under ukreg.com, which is part of fasthosts.

Nav
11-09-2003, 15:28:54
btw have you noticed that the cheapest one also charges 10x as much as 1und1 for excess bandwidth... (naughty, not easy to see that!)

http://www.dataflame.co.uk/hosting.html

The L1000 plan: 1GB space, 20GB Bandwidth/month, whistles, bells, just under 100/year. Keep control of domain name.

I use the L250 without problems. I don't know if it'll scale up though.

Otherwise, 1und1 looks the best of the three above.

That is basically a con.

Hosted in Houston, Texas. Almost definately by www.rackshack.net (thanks for trying to help though!)

I see.

Actually they do state where it's hosted. You just have to click the network link... I've had problems before with a UK host using US servers...

I've started a thread in the technoglow forum to test response times to those two hosts. (1and1 and fasthosts)

I've got a friend who has a startup hosting business. I don't know any details, but I'll talk to her. It would be in Canada.

I could upgrade the LMN webspace, but that would be in Germany (I don't see it as an disadvantage ;) ). It's on 1und1.de, which is the same as 1and1.co.uk. I made quite good experiences, some of the CGs have a LM email address, so they may have made different experiences.

Vincent

To check out you could ping the LMN webspace

Vincent

It's intersting that the packages are quite different here in germany.

If a port is needed in the storm, I could help out. It is in Canada as well, but as a stop gap if nothing else comes through... let me know. I already have a server on some sort of back bone. Or something.

I don't know how this stacks up, but if my costs don't go up it's free.

I am pretty sure I am on the 15GB per month plan right now, and not coming close to using it all.

Ping this place if you want to know how it performs.

Anysort of situation where the counterglow.net address could be lost should be ruled out I think.

Fraid I dont know much about web hosting although I could talk to a friend of mine who owns an business ISP

Vincent
15-09-2003, 19:02:28
what about the counterglow.com address?

Nav
16-09-2003, 22:20:29
Well at the moment I'm swinging towards the 1and1 one, 50 is a significant saving, and response times to the US aren't significantly slower (and the germans will be in ping heaven, though KG will lose his title).

Darkstar
17-09-2003, 03:41:08
KG will lose being the Living Brown Card?

Bob

I think we should take the LMN variant, that way "we" would save another 80 GBP becaue I would still pay for my part of the LMN webspace (plus my annual CG fees)

Nav
17-09-2003, 09:43:43
what are the specs for the upgraded package? Does it offer all that the Uk one does?

Funkodrom
17-09-2003, 10:03:08
Sounds like it could be a good idea to me.

Bob
17-09-2003, 10:48:44
I'm going to check it out an post it here tonight.
If we got further questions I could contact the ISP (because I am already a customer I got access to support).

Nav

It needs to be comparible or better (bandwidth could be a bit lower). But things such as SSH access etc, are very important.

php / mysql ? absolutely vital!

but it's also considerably more expensive, for CG to save 80 on the UK offer you would have to pay 180 yourself. That does not seem right considering the amount of traffic that CG has. You shouldn't have to pay that much to host Loudmed.

Also my major issue is being able to talk to technical support myself. Therefore I think it would be better to go along the UK route. Thanks for your help though Karsten,

fp, I guess to get to the one and one page you'llhave to browse manually from the front page. Hosting | Professional Hosting | More details.. oh or click seans link.

Yeah OK. Maybe I should move LM to the UK (or to 1&1 UK) ...

Nav
24-09-2003, 14:35:56
So does the Commitee of the CG Hosting move endorse 1&1 UK as our new host? say yay or nay ;)

I say yav or nav.
Let's try it. That we we can keep some IT jobs in Germany
