Unusually I started receiving a bit of decent spam!, a weekly music newsletter called BeMusic (albeit a bit commerical).

Anyway they linked to a site that listed the Fiftiest worst artists of all time (as compiled by Blender magazine)

http://www.glyphs.com/forums/load/music/msg080941119956.html

That's outrageous.

Yeah, Creed are much too low and Vanilla Ice shouldn't be in there at all!

Primus are too low or high. er. Shouldn't be there. Nor the Goo Goo Dolls.

Funkodrom

And he complains about me spelling prejudice wrong, speaking of which, aren't there some reviews you should be doing?

REM are redeemed by their back-catalogue in my opinion, even though they have been a bit arse since "Up" came out.

There are far more terrible "artists" than the listed ones. Just check the old 70s/80s charts.
Stuff like this http://www.musik-page.de/70er/d77.htm

They should be shot in the faces for Shiny Happy People alone.

Geez...you can't be objective in art...for fuck's sake, there are people that actually like hotel style portraits and landscape paintings...
I actually enjoy quite a few in that list, on one level or another...that's messed up. I personally like REM (older) and while I acknowledge the seeming quality of Skinny Puppy, don't care for their music.
Best of lists work much better, it seems.

Hey a couple of their worst bands are the same as mine. Yngwie Malmsteen and Vanilla Ice in particular.

The Doors and Primus don't belong there at all.

The Doors as one of the fifty worst artists of all time is just plain idiotic. Pia Zadora anyone?

Darkstar

Well, do a CG list of Worst Artists then.

Personally, I think the Doors suck (although they do have a few songs that I like or think are ok). But it's all a matter of personal taste.

BigGameHunter
08-09-2003, 23:51:11
How can something suck if you like it, even partially?
I can say the County Fair sucks, but the elephant ears are great, but those are two different things and I can get elephant ears any number of places.
I have to go throught The Doors to get to L.A. Woman though...they are inextricable.

Between the ages of about 15 and 18 I thought http://www.rhino.com/fun/beatgreets/Doors%20hello.gif were the greatest band of all time ever. I still think they're pretty damn good. I have all their albums. Even the lame, post-Jim Morrison's death, compilation/out-takey albums like Weird Scenes Inside The Gold Mine. I know most of the words to most of their songs. Still, I suppose whoever made that list just doesn't share my (bordering on obsessive) enthusiasm.

But Starship! Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now is one of the greatest soft-rock tunes of all time! Also Starship are essentially Jefferson Airplane, an amazing band. How can they be number 5?

Darkstar
09-09-2003, 00:35:06
BGH, you can think a band sucks, but like a song or three they do. That doesn't change the fact that you think they suck. Just that you'll Kazaa those few songs you think are ok. Or put those particular tracks on a personal mix tape, for instance.

A broken analog clock is right twice a day, man. And the worst bands can make a song or two that you can like.

Debaser, whatever floats your boar... Music is to be enjoyed. If you enjoy it, play it again. ;)

BigGameHunter
09-09-2003, 15:29:00
Now that's a new one...I've never seen a floating boar--however, they are somewhat scarce in these parts.

Hey BGH! They forgot ABBA! ;)
and check out MDAs avatar for the floating boar...

BigGameHunter

ABBA was the shit for a disco band.
We have to keep this all in perspective, people.
And Debaser, I too shared a bizarre fascination with The Doors.
Weird...what was it about them that had so much appeal to late teenaged boys?
Must be the whole Dyonisian (sp?) deal.

Bob

I remember 1000 bands that were a lot more shit than ABBA, all the 70s ABBA clones like Champagne and so on. Terrible Eurodisco bands. Patrick Hernandez! Argh

i don't think the doors just have an appeal for late teenage boys, i still like the doors. I only own the eponymous first album and LA Woman but i think they're both great albums. I'm not exactly sure what albums 'people are strange' and 'love street' are on, but they're both cracking songs too.

Debaser
10-09-2003, 11:21:44
I think People Are Strange is on Strange Days which is ok, but maybe a bit twee. A lot of the songs are written by guitarist Robbie Krieger.

Love Street is on Waiting For The Sun, a pretty good album.

Bad 70s disco bands. Bad 80s poser rock bands (Foreigner!). I easily could come up with 100 terrible german bands worse than the Doors for example.
And why are the RHCP worse than Jethro Tull?

I didn't as a teenager, but I did worship Echo and the Bunnymen who had a real Doors fixation.

BigGameHunter

Yeah...I never saw that in their music, however.
Echo and the Bunnymen were great.
