Parts of it actually run faster than they did in Windows 98 SE.

What parts??

The parts that depend on proper chipset support in the OS...

Mostly IE; I've noticed since that's what I've been using (grudgingly). I think I've established that my brother's operating system needed desperately to be reinstalled. :)

Support is definitely a big part. It's an ancient Compaq POS 5360 with its hard drive replaced. Apparently they had a really hard time getting everything set up properly in Win98 when they installed it, and when it all started working, it was by a shoestring and they just left it like that. XP worked right off the bat, including the cable and video drivers.

Do you realize how much more up to date the drivers are on the XP disk - add that to a much stabler OS to begin with and your not gonna have crashes. Just I wouldn't imagine it running much of anything - though a K6-2 can't run much of anything anyhow. :)
