that's just pure brilliance

Funkodrom

It is.

"Inside every gook there's an American trying to get out."
"We've got to try and keep our heads until this peace craze blows over."

Venom

Full metal jacket, right?

maroule

The movie that makes it nearly impossible for me to watch the History Channel show Mail Call.

maroule

What's that?

Venom

R Lee Emrey on regular TV acting like a sissified drill sargent while answering military/history related questions that viewers send it. Pretty good show really, but it's just too hard to watch Emrey without thinking "Private Pyle, I'm gonna give you three seconds, exactly three fuckin' seconds, to wipe that stupid lookin' grin off your face or I will gouge out your eyeballs and skull fuck you! "

he has a few good lines in FMJ...
it's funny because as a kid I remembered Louis Gossett Jr in 'officer & Gentleman' as a tough guy, but he was really a poofta in comparison

Venom
28-08-2003, 13:35:58
Everything he says to the trainees is quote worthy. Gossett was definitely an actor playing a drill sargent, where as Emrey was a drill sargent playing himself. Great stuff, I'd call that movie one of my inspirational sources as to how I berate people today.

the main difference being he does it to their faces while you do it at a computer screen covered in semen stains

Venom

They're not stains. They're fresh.

say, KG, considering your chubbyness around the jaw, I command you on the choice of your initials
very fitting

not only do i not understand that comment, but i also refute it

Funkodrom

Full Metal Jacket is like two films. One's really funny and the other's really harsh.

I always thought Joker missed the opportunity to give a great answer to that...

"What's it mean? Peace through superior firepower, SIR!"

Oh well.

maroule
29-08-2003, 07:16:21
victory is achieved through superior firepower, not peace

Darkstar
29-08-2003, 08:23:51
"Peace through superior firepower" is a motto for several groups. Would have been fitting.

If victory is an end to war, then peace is achieved through superior firepower.

military victory and victory are sometimes similar, and sometimes very different.

Venom
29-08-2003, 14:36:53
I sense that this thread has just taken a turn for the worse. I'm outta here.

maroule

naah,
you just have to be precise over the terms and I don't need any current event to illustrate my point : we can take French Algeria as an example of military victory followed by a political defeat

Funkodrom
29-08-2003, 14:46:24
And that's why Venom left. :)

Venom
29-08-2003, 15:01:06
No, I leave because someone makes an innocent generic statement and maroule, as usual, has to take it too seriously.

Funkodrom
29-08-2003, 15:03:49
Which is what he did again. :)

Venom
29-08-2003, 15:07:19
Why yes. Yes it is.

maroule
29-08-2003, 15:07:35
I didn't take it too seriously, I had just never heard that expression before, so I reacted to it (and not to DS), that's all

no big deal, really, let's move on

Funkodrom
29-08-2003, 15:07:48
So I was, like, right.

maroule
29-08-2003, 15:32:22

Very often, yes, they can be. But remember, we are discussing this in terms of "Full Metal Jacket" and its dialog.

Darkstar

Venom, if you think it's going to go super serious shit, just don't respond to it. Go threadjacking instead. Like we usually do.
