I saw their album at number 2 in the Virgin charts, and feared for the future.

yes. They are shit. That is the appeal I think. It's a bit like watching Alan Partridge doing karaoke or something, it is appalling but it is a joke. As far as I'm concerned Queen and Iron Maiden are dead and buried but this is a funny reminder of the terrible music that has been before. It's Spinal Tap-esque.

If they were actually serious I would fear for the future.

Shit, you know they're coming over here now.

I don't think they're shit. It's funny in the sense that they know they are very much a visual and aural homage to the cock rock bands of the late seventies/eighties, but if the music was shit i don't think there would be any appeal at all, after all this is hardly a new idea.

To use words like 'appalling' seems totally ridiculous. What is appalling about them?

Live they are fantastic, with more energy and arrogance than most 'proper' bands. And I think their cover of Radiohead's 'street spirit' is great.

That's as maybe, but what's wrong with bringing back the good old days?

Haven't you heard?

They were sacrificed to Satan tonight, hell and fire was spawned to be released.

Sorry.

The Darkness are great. Long hair and widdly solos are great. Their stage show is excellent. They are really nice guys who don't take themselves too seriously, which is great. That doesn't mean the music is a joke though. They are playing exactly the kind of music they want to make because that's the music they like. They're a talented and very tight band who put on a great show. The people who like The Darkness don't like them as an amusing throwback, they like them because their playing music they want to hear. There hasn't been a band like that for a long time and it's refreshing, I think, to have something different around. You don't have to listen to it if you don't like it.

Maiden are still one of the biggest selling touring bands in the world, and their last album was their best since Fear of the Dark.

There's a huge market for that kind of rock out there, always has been. It might not be cool or 'arty' but I don't really give a shit about that. Fuck artistic pretension and let bands have fun playing music they want to play rather than conforming to some narrow minded ideal of 'good music'.

I'm off to try and book Maiden tickets.

I hope they're saving money. Three years from now they'll be playing to half-empty Fresher Fayre venues. Four years from now it'll be the cabaret circuit.

That's the fate of cheese bands, regardless of how technically proficient they are. The Darkness are the Right Said Fred or Racey of the new millennium.

They're definitely not cool. :)

King_Ghidra

surely right now they're the very definition of cool, unless the rules have changed and being in a wildly successful rock n roll band isn't cool anymore

Funkodrom

I dunno, Iron Maiden were never cool despite being a wildly succesfull rock and roll band.

You don't think he looks like the type of kid who was in the chess club and smelt like stale biscuits?

Yeah.
Freddy Murcury = good at maths, no friends
Prince = wore NHS glasses
Gary Glitter = always wore a grey shirt and had a bowl cut

It's true. He says that he only got so good at guitar by being a no mates nerd at school and staying at home playing his guitar all day.

I think it is very difficult to second guess what Freddy Mercury was like when he was a lad, considering he spent a lot of time at school in North India. He was probably really good at chess, and most likely half decent at hockey/kabaddi.
