Well, because of the recent blackout in the Lake Erie/Niagra loop, the fact that the US has decided to delay any serious plans for Orbital Power Generation and Beaming was in the news.

Now, the real reason this has been "delayed" for a couple more years is... the US isn't ready to develop it's super killer weapons yet. :)

Seriously... since they are talking about super strong microwaves being used to beam the power from orbit (or better for security, the moon). You know what a microwave does to those instant noodle soup things... imagine a whole city!

Of course, I wonder how much all our microwave tech actually add to the general heating of the earth as it is. As well as just how much heat comes off those power lines. They heat up, just like wires in your toaster do, after all. If each cow fart effectively adds 10 joules of heat to the air, how much is all that microwave activity and electrical conduct adding?

Anyways, the US is sure that China isn't even ready to start drafting their plans for killer microwave stations in orbit or the moon, so the US sees no need to rush its own plans...

What happens if the microwaves hit a cow farm? An explosion equivalent to a few tons of TNT? :)

Orbital Power generation will never be completely reliable unless Random Events are turned off.
