I'm a modern console virgin, the last one I had before getting a PC was a Mega Drive.

I want to get myself a console as it seems the way to go.

Which should I go for - Xbox or Playstation 2?

Which games are best? I'm into 1st person shooters like Delta Force, Rainbow 6 and Operation Flashpoint. I have also tried PS2 Vice City and enjoyed it.

I'm in the UK so if any fellow Brits can guide me to the best deals I woud be most grateful.
Cheers

X-Box. It's better. The PS2 maybe has more, better games, but the X-Box is closing rapidly.

The PS2 has been around longer, and is to be replaced by the PS3 in the not-to-distant future (probably has a shorter remaining useful life than the X-box), but as Venom said it's got lots of games.

One of the reasons I bought my PS2 was for Vice CIty, however you can now by that on the PC. However you can't get Pro Evolution Soccer 2 on the PC... :)

If you are a crazy football fan who loves to play football games then get the PS2 so you can play Pro Evolution Soccer 3 when it comes out before Christmas. Best. Game. Ever.
Seriously. We ain't kidding.
If your PC isn't good enough to handle GTA3 and Vice City and you want to play them then you'll need a PS2 for those too. They're also awesome games.

If you aren't that fussed about footie games then you'll definitely be better off with the XBox.

The PS2 is better for RPG's too, btw, although generally speaking the XBox is by far the superior console.

RPG is one of the areas the X-Box is catching up fast in. Sports are still better on the PS2.

Yeah, Fable looks like it'll be a good RPG on the XBox when it comes out. Morrowind is good too if you like that sort of thing.

I prefer the japanese-style RPG's myself, which is why I prefer the PS2 for those games.

Microsoft has said that it wants to out JRPG (japanese RPG) the PS2, and will be concentrating on that in the future of X-Box. Whether they will succeed or not thouhg...

Assuming GameCube is not an option (should also have PES3, has Zelda, Mario Kart, F-Zero, Mario 128, Mario Party…has the best controllers around, is the smallest, has a cool boot screen) then I would go for Xbox. It has the better FPS-style games, and the thought of someone buying a new PS2 baffles me.

The only 2 reasons to by an end of life console is: 1) cheap, cheap price and 2) its extensive (and cheap) game library.

Xbox. Or a gamecube:).

Gamecube!

I nearly bought a Gamecube the other day when I was hungover but then I realised I couldn't afford it. If PES3 is coming out on GC I might get it next pay month.

Er... for the games you like either x-box or ps2 are both better than Gamecube. X-box will last you longer.

If you get an X-Box, you will please Asher; if you don't get an X-Box, you will displease Asher.

Make of that what you will.

Asher may actually cry if you don't get an X-Box.
