Anyone seen/played/heard anything about this?

Seems to be a WW2 naval sim of some sort. I very nearly bought it on sunday but was distracted by elite force for 5 quid.

I used to play a lot of Janes Fleet command before it took a dislike to my OS (and it was rather buggy) but this might satisfy my addiction untill Harpoon finally turns up...

My mistake its an alternate reality WW1/WW2 naval sim. Its backstory has the luistiania not being sunk, the americans not joining the war. Britain falls and the remains of the royal navy relocate to the the fleet bases at gibralter and hong kong. The japanese form an alliance with the british government in exile and a three way standoff occurs (US v Germany/Austria v UK?/japan)

All very odd but it looks quite cool as you get to comman loads of different surface and submarine vessels.

new version of harpoon coming out eh?

a game i used to hear a lot about back in my amiga days but never owned

like the sound of some naval combat though, i'd probably give it a go if it turns out to be half decent

You're going to be waiting a LONG time for Harpoon 4. At least another 6 months.

amazon.co.uk says october

not that amazon is a reliable source for final release dates...

OK I got it last night and I'm fairly suprised.

It looks like it should be WW2 Fleet command but its nothing like that. Its more Super Ship Fighter 2.

Unlike fleet comand where you have a huge operational area and potentially a carrier group under your command here you (mostly) have one ship. And rather than being in some war room miles away from the action here your on the bridge giving the orders (by voice recognition if you want).

Its all a bit frantic and I seem to have bugger all control over my guns (I found that setting surface defence and air defence to auto and letting them get on with shooting stuff was most effective). So basically you drive a MTB, corvette, destroyer or destroyer escort around shelling things and trying not to be sunk.

Or you drive a submarine and try and sink stuff.

Its pretty good but not at all what I was expecting and it stutters a little at times but its been pretty enjoyable so far. (esp when I finally managed to torpedo a corvette as a sub)

More later when I have tried out the campaign mode.

Oh no no no no. Go to the Harpoon site. There was some kind of shakeup in the development staff. October is way off.

The last news is from April and they were in the process of entirely changing the design teams.

Most recent guestimates have it Christmas, so I guess my 6 months was a bit off. So sue me. The last time I checked that site was back in April.

Yes, all design teams have been changed and so has the title. It will now be called Sid Meier's SimWhaling.

13-08-2003, 13:10:51
Ok, I'll admit it. SimWhaling made me laugh. If only because it would have been whaling with missles and aircraft carriers.

BWould be easier to right the dam game myself than wait for it.

13-08-2003, 15:08:33
There is so much wrong with that last post.

13-08-2003, 15:18:47
yep I'll try again

It would be so much easier to smack venom in the head than wait for that game.

Better, but still missing the capital V in my name.

13-08-2003, 16:05:48
Yeah, it's venVom you idiot.

13-08-2003, 16:31:56
It's a silent V.
