View Full Version : SHORT STORY CONTEST IDEA THING!!

ok, well i thought it might be cool to have a little weekly feature to enable us to tap our creative writing juices.

What i suggest is we pick a title e.g. 'Saigon '72', 'a trip to the seaside', 'the yellow t-shirt' or whatever, something that allows a fair bit of freedom with the story, then all the particapnts write a little story, as long or as short as they want, in the next 5 or 6 days. Then we have a little informal vote and whoever wins gets to pick the next week's title.

Whaddya reckon? I'd like it to be nice and informal so we get as many people participate as possible. If people only want to write 50 words thats cool, let's just get people involved.

If you're up for it, post in this thread and post a suggestion for the first story title.

up for it
idea : let's just take a random sentence in any novel and elaborate on it

up for it, but I don't want to write. I want to mock everyone else.

I'm up for it, definitely. Good idea.

Sounds good.

I'm up for it too. I think maroule's idea is a good one.

I think we should set a word total (say 500? or less?) so that it's easier to compare the stories. If it's gonna be done every week they need to be short, otherwise people won't find the time to contribute.

as i was saying, i would rather someone wrote 50 words and contributed, than didn't contribute at all

but if someone want to write 100 words why stop them, creative juices should be able to run free - anyway you're only going to have 5 or 6 days to write a story, so the dangers of overly verbose entries are minimal i think

given that maroule's idea has some support (and i grudgingly like it :p) does monsieur majoulet want to suggest a suitable 'random sentence' to kick the fun off?

500 words could be a suggested maximum. If someone wants to write 6/700 words or maybe even 1000 to finish their piece then that's OK but if we have 8 or 9 3,000 word stories I'll never have time to read them all! :)

Oh and maybe if someone wins one week then they can't win the next week, or the person with the second highest number of votes on the next week gets to choose, so we keep rotating whos idea it is to start.

I'm up for it...but I don't like the random sentence concept as much as the random concept or whatever KG originally suggested.
I have an English/Lit/Writing degree, so what I say should pretty much go...

...but if it gets the ball rolling, that's fine too...I'd avoid pronouns if you do that, however. Don't want to pigeonhole people too much...maybe take the last sentence of some famous work?

the last words of American Psycho are:
THIS IS NOT AN EXIT

how about that?

Sounds workable...but of course, as usual, it is rife with browncardian hidden meanings.

Sounds neat to me. :)

I kinda agree with BGH, but I'll go with whatever.

i meant to say, the whole winning thing is pretty irrelevant to me - we can just rotate whose turn it is by all means

my major aim is for everyone to have fun and to see what kind of stuff the fevered minds of CG turn out :D

As THIS IS NOT AN EXIT doesn't seem to be causing too many problems, i'll create a new thread for people to post the actual stories in and with the 'rules' and stuff. I figure the sooner we get this off the ground the better.

sunday night sounds ok as a deadline to me

Unfortunately I don't actually have a free night between now and Sunday so I might have to sit out the first round.

You can all sit around in the pub writing them at the 'poly meet on Friday afternoon. ;)

You should lock this bad boy so we aren't traipsing all over the boards trying to orchestrate shit.

Can I write poems instead of short stories? I suck at prose.

Okay, okay. I've got a couple of hours, I'll smack together something in the indicative tense just to fuck with your minds.
