I understand that music can't be free. The artists, technicians, producers etc earn money with it. But I don't understand why a CD costs (example from JPC.de) 22 EUR. a vinyl record 16 EUR, a MC 14 EUR. The production of a CD costs 8 EUR (about 7$) more than a MC? This is 2002, not 1985!

here's the price of a CD (for consumers!)

HERE (http://musikservice.de/cd/kleinauflagen_privat.htm)
OR HERE (http://www.turmstudio.de/cd500.htm)

If I'd order 1000 copies it would be about 1 EUR per CD incl. jewel case etc.

For 300 MC copies I pay 2 EUR per MC incl blah
HERE (http://www.cue.musik-netz.de/index.htm)

Don't ask for vinyl prices ;)

I'd expect that the CD/vinyl or CD/MC ratio is at least 10:1 for the music industry (how many CD/MC did you buy?). So CDs have to be a lot cheaper than MC/vinyl. Any explanations - except "big rip off"?

You aren't really paying for the cd though.

I don't understand why Vinyl prices are different to CD ones though.

It's the break down of who gets what whcih is the most annoying/upseting thing.

I hate the fact that the artist makes less money on an album than the shop that sells it:mad:

I took the prices for Madonna's "Music" album for the example , so the produced a lot of copies, it's not a small edition. Even a double vinyl is cheaper than a single CD. And CD is now old tech, it's no supercool high tech factory they have to pay for. If someone asks me to make a copy of the LM CD on MC or CD, I usually make a CD copy because it's easier and cheaper.

Because people will pay that price.

Only reason.

You get the same thing with DVDs and videos. Don't forget that to print CDs and DVDs is also a lot cheaper that writing MC and Video too because for the magnetic tapes you need racks of tape machines and people to load and unload them. CDs and DVDs you just have a big stamping machine to print them.

Yeah, simple. When CD was new the people accepted the higher prices because it was oh-so-difficult to produce CDs. Why making it cheaper now? And how will you get Madonna's new album if not via Sony (no piracy links, please)
