I recently picked up the Fantasy Masterworks edition that they have called Elric, although it is actually a few short Elric stories bundled together with the proper novel Stormbringer.

A long time ago i read some of Moorcock's Hawkmoon and Count Brass stuff and never really got too excited about it, but this is much better.

Moorcock's style is very interesting, he doesn't muck about with descrption too much, just whizzes along from one big battle or drama to another. It can actually be quite disconcerting, i often felt he should have taken a little more time over various scenes.

Nevertheless, his characters and concepts are brilliant. and Elric really is the ultimate fantasy protagonist, a fantastic creation. His love/hate relationsip with his daemon sword is just a beautiful scenario. I also love the whole daemon summoning/bargaining idea, very well implemented.

Moorcock very much fits in to a kind of pulpy, action-packed kind of fantasy but it also has lots of great ideas flying around and is well-written to boot. I would recommend this particular edition to anyone new to Elric.

Tried Moorcock once ... and once was enough.

Of course, that was something like 35 years ago, so my tastes may have changed in the interim. :)

Is this the same Elric from Moobyjubu that's an albino or something?
