We had a thread about movies with no female actors here (I can't find it) and we were not sure about "Silent running". I watched it yeasterday: There's a picture of a little girl on the wall and the incredible terrible soundtrack of Joan Baez. No female characters, no female voices (radio etc), but 3 "drones"/robots.

Are you saying that drones=females?

All 3 robots were done by male actors.

Fantastic Film. One of my all time greats - must be the soundtrack.

It's Kitsch.

I remember thinking that it was decent when it came out. But I haven't seen it in about thirty years. Considering that it was made in the days before decent special effects, it wasn't bad.

Did Sleeper come out around the same time? It was the better SF movie for me.

Oh, I was surprised, the special FX are very good. I like the story, it's so simple but I like the undertones. No hero except the surviving robot, maybe.

It's one of my favourite films. I think the ending is really sad.

It's like a classic tragedy. The main character becomes guilty by killing the space truckers. He thinks he does the "right" thing, but becomes guilty. There is the point where there is no chance for a good ending (when the radio connection is reestablished). They say the chance of finding the space ship from earth is minimal, so it's some kinde of deus ex macina. It leads to the destruction of the main character. He finally accepts his fate and is released because he manages to save the wood. The innocent (undamaged!) robot survives.

So, it's Oedipus Rex in space.

I think it's sad for the robot. The way they film the robots is very clever. They appear very human, despite not having faces for emotion. Part of it is how the main character reacts to them, part is just body language I guess.... hard for a box on legs. That robot at the end has lost his friends, and all the humans then eventually he just gets fired off into space to tend the gardens on his own until he wears out. :(

Which I think is really sad. I just really like the whole aspect of the film where the guy is lonely so he's trying to make the robots be his friends. Anyway the whole film after he kills the space truckers until the end is basically about him dealing with loneliness so at the end I get this real sense that the robot's got this eternity of loneliness ahead of him, even worse than what the main character goes through because he doesn't even have the other robots to keep him company. Of course it's silly, it's a robot, it doesn't get lonely. Anyway, that bit of the story is much more important to me than the actual main plot of the film.

But they are only in a couple of scenes. Lots of long, talking bits and simple scenes with nothing going on in them, otherwise.

I had a point. But I can't remember it. It had something to do with Laz usually leaving me alone.
