View Full Version : Theif 2

Anyone got this? I thought the first game was excellent (and had the only cutscenes I actually enjoyed watching, except maybe the ending of hardwar). Missed the second somehow, probably due to a excess of baldurs gate. Seen it out on budget now and as I have a post vice city gap in my time i thought it might fill a few hours. is it worth a few quid?

I don't know
Thief 2 is excellent, though

Yes, it is brilliant. Though it will fill quite a bit more than a few hours. I think I had a game time of more than four hours on the largest mission, and between two and three is pretty standard. Add in all the failed attempts, and it took a quite significant chunk of my time.

cool. the girlf is off on a hen night next weekend. So should have some time to get my teeth into it.

I remember being very impressed with the bank job/mission. Soooo much marble tile.
Was it 1 or 2 that had the "thief's highway" mission? That was excellent as well.

Lots of Thief stuff at www.ttlg.com. My wife lurks at the forums there often. We play a lot of the fan made missions together when we get the chance.

It was 2, I loved that. It was like two missions rolled into one, and the fight between the guards was great.

25-06-2003, 19:41:20
Will it run on XP?

25-06-2003, 19:59:34
Both run on XP for me. The Thief 2 patch doesn’t want to install, though.

If you liked Theif...have you tried System Shock 2?

26-06-2003, 08:31:17
Got it, played it, loved it.

But the voices in my head wont go away.

Now that sounds more Star Wars - Run luke, Run.

It was the freaky voices of the many in SS2 that really made that game. + the clinking noises of the android nurses coming down coridor as they called to you. And the frigging pyscho-monkeys. They made me jump the first time one fireballed me. And when your trying to sneak through the cargo holds with one round of pistol ammo and a jammed shotgun and as the door behind you closes you hear the one before it open again. And all the voices of the many, all the little high pitched ones in the background, and SHODAN appearing all round you.

Thank fuck they didnt have EAX audio back then. I'm not sure I could have taken it.

I couldn't finish that game, I got too damned tense. I think I got to the crew mess halls before "selectively forgetting" to play any more.

26-06-2003, 22:19:46
You mean you never went inside The Many?! The teeth, man, the TEETH!

Of course, I had to finish it on a friend’s PC because my old one slowed to a crawl in the last gunfight.

I heard bad things about the jumping exercise on the teeth of the Many.

Thief 2's rooftop mission was where I pulled off my first midair blackjacking, dropping off a ledge behind a guard. I was shocked when it showed up on the statistics screen at the end of the mission.

Looking Glass was an awesome group. Warren Spector seems to have reassembled most of them at Ion Storm, Austin. They are not to be confused with the defunct Ion Romero, Daikatana.

Thief series was awesome indeed.

Lady of Chicken purposely won't play System Shock 2 (when she was watching me play it over my shoulder, she jumped and screamed at the first of the many that attacked me on the first level!) Too scary.

It's a great game - I might reinstall it.

MDA: They also made Deus Ex... and with Deus Ex 2 coming out. At least Doom 3 has been delayed until January now at the earliest, so I won't be inundated with games to play when I need to study. Some people are pissed, but it works out great for me.

Thief 2's graphics are dated to put it mildly, but still, it's a great game.

25-07-2003, 08:39:33
ooo deus ex 2. Looking forward to that.

The teeth of the many were a pain but not impassible.

The bit I could never do is a bit further in ( and I think its the last bit) where you have to come out of a big pond and get past 2 of those floaty projection things then past a couple of rumblers through a corridor and into a room full of bad guys. I could never find the body of the projection things and they woudl always rematerilaise behind me and waste me.

25-07-2003, 10:35:23
Yep, that was pretty much the end. After that you drop down and shoot SHODAN, IIRC.

Trip: who cares if the graphics are dated? You’re not going to get all Asher on us now, are you?

I still play deus ex regularly, my wife likes thief a little more, but I like the scifi bit in deus ex. Lots of good fan missions for thief1/2 out there.

There was a fan modded version of deus ex being developed called the Cassandra project, but I haven't looked in on it in a long time.

Thief 3 is coming out as well, will use the same engien with some code changes (obviously) as Deus Ex 2.

To be honest, apart from the bit about the Keepers, it sounds all as before. Only without the ‘normal City life’ missions to be getting on with.

27-07-2003, 16:52:34
Great game.

I think that my favorite level was the police station. I liked the layout, and burgling the cops was just fun.

I would buy it, Beta1.

Already have a fair bit through it.
