Let's start a log, as they seem to have a high mortality rate...

AND HERE'S HOW IT HAPPENED: Total: 31

Drug overdose (7): 3 (Heroin) 2 (Heroin/Cocaine=speedball) 1 (anti-depressants) 1 ("anabuse" type drug)

Probable overdose/possible natural (1): Alice in chains member.

Auto accident (3): (1 while driving, 2 while passengers)

Plane crash (3):

Helicopter crash (1):

Alcoholism: 1

Drowning: 1

Asphyxiation (vomit) 2: Mama Cass choked on some food?

Murder (3): 1 (poison) 2 (gunshot)

Suicide (2): 1 (shotgun) 1 (hanging)

Probably suicide/MIA (1): Gone missing near a high bridge.

Heart failure from complete abuse of the body (3):

Trichinosis (food poisoning/pork) (1): Mozart

Cancer (1): Frank Zappa (prostate)

Meningitis (1): Jerry Nolan

I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to disallow River Phoenix, John Belushi and Marilyn Monroe. Somebody can start a "Famous Dead Actors" thread in the Film and Fiction forum.

Big surprise that drug overdose and transportation accidents are leading the pack. Where's old age?

Do you want us to just simply list dead & famous musicians, do we get to pick a favourite each?

BigGameHunter
19-06-2003, 17:46:40
Oh, let's start with favorites and go into great detail about the cause of death and how it affected their bands, fans, etc.

I'd like to hear about some that should have been famous but died young, etc. as well.

Jeff Buckley, as I’m sure you all know, went swimming in Memphis Harbor.

Nick Drake, and again you all know this, overdosed on anti-depressants. He didn’t leave a note. For some reason his death annoys me more than that of any other musician.

I always kinda liked Robert Johnson's "poisoned by jealous husband" death.

Elvis, deal with it.

Foetus

Bon Scott.

Choked on his own vomit in a car after a night out. Band went on to even greater heights. Sad he died, but like our war dead, he shall not grow weary, nor the years condemn.

BigGameHunter

I'm a little ignorant of both Nick Drake and Jeff Buckley and their music.

I think I'll keep a "cause of death" tally in the first post.

Sean
19-06-2003, 20:40:02
Nick Drake surely counts as an overdose? Suicide isn’t a how.

Johnny Thunders! Overdose. Heroin.

Well...I would have said so as well...thought there was something in your post about him offing himself...? hmmm...nope...ok...I'll change it!
Once we get enough, I can start breaking them into sub-groups.

He overdosed, but I don’t think that anyone knows if it was intentional.

phil lynott

how the fuck did he die, i certainly don't know

BigGameHunter
20-06-2003, 06:27:59
Just as projects had began to take off, Philip Lynott lost his battle with drugs and died of heart failure and pneumonia on January 4, 1986. Lynott had been admitted to Salisbury's intensive care unit on Christmas night after being transferred from a clinic for drink and drug addiction.

A few obvious ones. Kurt Cobain shot himself, John Lennon got shot, Layne Staley overdosed (I think), Cliff Burton got killed in a traffic accident, Ian Curtis hung himself...

Keith Richards died some time way back in the 70s. Thankfully the cocaine keeps him moving.

Buddy Holly - plane crash

Manic Street Preachers bloke - probably died by jumping off bridge into river.

Mama Cass - choked on her own vomit, IIRC

Michael Jackson - murdered by plastic surgeon and mysteriously supplanted by unconvincing white lookalike.

Jim Morrison (smack)
River Phoenix (smack & coke)
John Belushi (blues brother - coke, smack, speed, alcohol)
Janis Joplin (smack overdose)
Marylin Monroe (coke & barbituates)

and

Keith Moon (Heminevrin, a medication for combatting alcoholism)

Jimi Hendrix 28, overdose

Oh golly....got some updating to do...uh, protein...was River Phoenix a musician? And I guess Monroe makes it because she sang some, eh? I'd be more comfortable putting her in a Dead Actors thread in the Film and Fiction section...
Some of those others I'll have to do some research on first...

Jerry Garcia (officially a heart attack, but probably an OD or systemic shutdown from lack of drugs). I have a theory that if you've been a long term (smack) addict (in particular) and go on the the wagon, your body is probably more damaged by the cure than the disease.

Wasn't River Pheonix's band playing the night he died?

If someone is an actor does that stop them from being a musician? Where would Roger Daltrey or Billy Connolly or Goldie fit on the scale?

No, but they wouldn't be a "famous musician", they're a famous actor who also happens to be a musician.

Plus, all actors-turned-musicians are shit, at least the ones from a theatrical tradition. Unlike musicians-turned-actors, several of which are actually decent.

Otis Redding, Plane Crash
Aaliyah, Plane Crash
Jerry Nolan, Stroke brought on by Meningitis

Yeah, but Jerry was a diabetic, too. He was seriously unhealthy.

Charlotte Church has turned her hand to acting, as well. In a film with Craig Ferguson, can’t remember the title, don’t really care.

I'm going to elucidate the Grateful Dead's unfortunate keyboardist curse:

Pigpen (aka Ron McKernan: died of too much liquor in the old liver). 1973

Keith Godchaux died in an automobile accident in 1980

Brent Mydland: Drug overdose, speedball (heroin and cocaine injection). Mid-90's

Bruce Hornsby and Vince Welnick (The Tubes!) filled in after Mydland, despite the "curse".

That's embarassing.

Hate to be a stickler, Laz, but you've killed AC/DC's guitarist (unjustly).
You're thinking of Angus MacLise.

A few more famous Rock danglers.

Michael Hutchence (possibly an auto-erotic accident)
Billy MacKenzie
The drummers from Feeder and Lush.

It's not just rock stars who die young...

Eazy E (AIDS related illness)
Notorious B. I. G. (shooting)
Tupac Shakur (shooting)

Scabrous Birdseed
21-06-2003, 19:54:19
Nor is it just people from Britain and the US!

Bob Marley (Cancer)
Tenor Saw (Run over by a car in Houston, TX)
Henry "Junjo" Lawes (Shooting)
Don Drummond (Committed suicide in an insane asylum/was killed by hospital staff working for mobsters hired by the family of his exotic dancer girlfriend who he'd stabbed to death four years earlier depending on who you believe)
"Cool" James Dandu (Car accident)

Okay, so all except the last are Jamaicans. But they've just got so many damn musicians.

Mr. Bas
