View Full Version : American College Radio Stations....

Are they actually run by colleges? Or are they just based in college towns?

And why are they so fucking good? We don't get anything near as cool in this country. I'm currently grooving to the delicious indie sounds of www.somafm.com (the 'indiepop rocks' section) and every song they play is excellent.

They're actually run by colleges for the most part. Many are part of the curriculum and some are independent "club" sorts of things.

Hmm, having actually read their site a little bit I've discovered that Soma FM isn't actually a college station, but that's still quite interesting. I suppose Reading college has "Blast FM", but it just churns out the same chart crap as most commercial stations round here.

Soma FM have just played the Pixies, Husker Du, Red House Painters and the Flaming Lips back to back. This makes me happy.

Our college radio station is funded by the SU, and it's commercial free. Any wingnut can get a show on it (Zylka has one). They play anything and everything, electronica to rock to hiphop to pop...

SU = Soviet Union or Sonic Undermind?

Why, Syracuse University, of course

Reading Uni station is excellent. That plays all good indie, rock and hip hop. Lots of obscure stuff too.
