The popular C programming language is a descendant of B (http://cm.bell-labs.com/cm/cs/who/dmr/bintro.html), which is best known as the precursor to C.

B was descended from BCPL, which is supposed to be the first language in which a "Hello, world!" program (http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hello_world_program) was written.

BCPL's direct ancestor was CPL, which Combined the scientific focus of FORTRAN and the business focus of COBOL. CPL stands for C Programming Language. It was, in turn, descended from a language called Alcohol or something, which is responsible for begin end delimitation. Aw hell, I'm done.

Don't forget APL or PL/I
I discovered an interesting theory oday: Every operating system with a "/" is doomed, like OS/2 or CP/M. Bad news for z/OS?

When I was at the uni they had a prgramming language PL (IIRC). It only had four statements. +1, if, goto and something else I forgot. The prof that you can write any program in PL, it's as powerful as pascal. We had an PL interpreter (on a PDP-11?!?!) and to find out if 17 is a prime number it took 60 minutes. It is, BTW

Hooray! That was my most geekish post so far.

Then there’s Malbogle. And of course the awesome Whitespace, already mentioned here.

Wouldn't it be fun to make our own difficult programming language? I'm thinking each command has to incorporate portions of the previous one in some way. And that each number is actually a redefinable variable. And maybe it should be three-dimentional.
