OK boys, sorry it's taken so long but then I'm no Darkcloud...;)

The results are split into total points / total votes...

29 / 5 / Casablanca
27 / 5 / Blade Runner
27 / 4 / Apocalypse Now
26 / 4 / Seven Samurai
24 / 4 / Godfather
23 / 3 / Dr. Strangelove
23 / 3 / Monty Python and the Life of Brian
21 / 3 / O Brother, Where Art Thou
19 / 3 / Citizen Kane
17 / 4 / Alien

I'm quite happy with that list as has a good range of old classics and new films, however it is to be noted that several of those films are there by virtue of only several votes out of the 18 people who took part (i.e. even the most popular films polled less than a third of the votes)...

I therefore suggest another poll to distill our results further still by voting on the 45 films with either a score of '10' or higher, or received more than one vote...

This is how we compare with the IMDB poll:

1 Godfather, The (1972)
2 Shawshank Redemption, The (1994)
3 Godfather: Part II, The (1974)
4 Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The (2001)
5 Schindler's List (1993)
6 Citizen Kane (1941)
7 Casablanca (1942)
8 Shichinin no samurai (1954)
9 Star Wars (1977)
10 Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)

The rest of the list is as follows:

Seven Samurai
Silent Running
Spinal Tap
Star Wars
Sting, The
Taxi Driver
Total Recall
True Romance
Wicker Man

I know it is another list (my metamorphosis into Dackcloud is almost complete!:cute: ), but I think it will make the top ten a bit more representative as well as having a smaller playing field to choose from and therefore subtly changing all our choices...:)

If you didn't vote in the first round, you can still vote in this one...

MOBIUS

This would make my new top ten

Monty Python and the Life of Brian
Dr. Strangelove
Silent Running
7 Samurai
Alien
Blade Runner
Apocalypse Now (redux)
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Pulp Fiction
Star Wars

All of the bottom five just failed to make my original cut, so it's great to get a chance to vote for them after all...:)

So basically we're doing a second round with all the ones that recieved 2 votes or more?

MOBIUS
23-05-2003, 14:04:35
Or got a straight 10 score

Funkodrom

I'm quite happy with the first list so I don't really feel I need to vote again...

Debaser

Taxi Driver
La Haine
True Romance
Dirty Harry
Spinal Tap
Pulp Fiction
Empire Strikes Back
Apocalypse Now
Cool Hand Luke
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

That's what I said but then I couldn't resist voting again anyway. :)

I’m not entirely sure, but I think you took my list as being 1-10, when it was actually 10-1 (i.e. the correct way of doing this).

Wicker Man
La Haine
Amelie
O Brother, Where Art Thou
Princess Mononoke
Dead Man
Blade Runner
It’s a Wonderful Life
Goodfellas
Citizen Kane

Dead Man for fuck's sake! Has no one seen this?

Me. Debaser. You.

I haven't.

Debaser
27-05-2003, 11:07:18
Dead Man's ok, but I wouldn't put it in any top 10 (obviously except for a top ten of artsy films featuring Johnny Depp and Iggy Pop).

Scabrous Birdseed
27-05-2003, 13:21:35
Airplane!
Barry Lyndon
Being John Malkovich
Casablanca
Dirty Harry
Godfather
Hannah and her Sisters
Monty Python and the Life of Brian
Pulp Fiction
Spinal Tap

Er, those are in order of appearance. Take my order from last time and splice the new ones in randomly at the bottom if you feel like a quality order.

I think Mobius is developing a full blown case of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Someone needs to spend more time in the garden.

I would like to end up with something to the effect of a list of great movies that I haven't seen yet. ANd than start watching them on video. For instance, there may be people out there who never saw On the Waterfront. And don't know what they are missing. Likewise, I am very high on High Noon. But I'm not sure if others just haven't seen it or don't share my liking for it. Anyway, I know individual tastes differ, but I think that for most of us, there are a lot of great movies, we haven't seen yet. I was blown away by the Herzog movies and wondered why the hell I'd never heard of them for instance...

Debaser

But it horses for courses innit? As a rule I don't like black and white films or westerns, and if you recomended a film to me tomorrow that fitted into either of those catogories I probably wouldn't go out of my way to see it, but at the same time I love vertigo, strangers on a train, la haine, butch cassidy and the sundance kid, unforgiven, psycho, it's a wonderful life, etc. I think generally it's best to discover good films for yourself.

Sean

No wonder you don’t like Dead Man then!

Debaser
05-06-2003, 11:11:31
I do like Dead Man, I just think it's a little bit awkward or forced. I think there are a lot of really interesting bits and a few good charactors in it, but somehow they don't sit very easily together,

GP

If you liked strangers on a train, then you might like High Noon. Some of the cinematic elements are similar. What might be the turnoff, is the very heavy emphasis on combat and ethics in the face of danger.

:D

OK, I guess we'll stick then - though I noticed that One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was coming on strong there...

I just figured we might get a more skewed list of less obvious films, but not enough people voted to make it worth tallying them up.

On the garden front I have managed to effect a number of repairs on my garden shed, but still need to sort out the roofing felt properly and fix the plastic window thingy.

The lawn is looking fantastic, but the battle against the weeds, pests and cats shitting in the borders is a bit of a pain.

The Tomato plants I've potted are coming on a storm, as are the strawberries. My mutant Rosemary bush is threatening to take over my rock garden area and we have a plentiful supply of bay leaves from next door's tree, mint, chives and a bit of fennel...:)

See, don't you feel better now?

I suggest you take representatives from the top 10 and place them in genre categories (i.e. Blade Runner in Sci-Fi) and begin that process. Western, Drama, Comedy, Horror, etc...etc...etc.
I'd love to have a CG manifesto I can refer to when renting movies, which is about all that passes for fun in my life. That and menacing my family emotionally, verbally and physically, of course!
;)
