View Full Version : Nightwish

It's a Finnish "metal" (Rock Opera?) band. A friend has sent me a couple of their songs ("Sleeping Sun", "Bless the Child"), and I've quite liked it.

Are they big in Europe/Asia, why have I never heard of them?

It's Metal! No, it isn't big in Europe. I've heard of them though. I think.

It's Metal/Rock Opera hybrid I think. :)

"Power Metal" would be the usual term. Yuo've never heard of them (probably) because (fantasy-based) Power Metal is relatively new as far as muscial genres go, first coming to any sort of popularity only about 10 years ago if that, and most of the bands producing songs are a) European (German/Italian/Scandanavian), have small english-speaking fanbases, and get zero radio play.

Nightwish are pretty cool though: I have a few of their songs.

Immortal Wombat, your description evokes hellish memories of Bolt Thrower (the official Games Workshop band). Tell me they aren't THAT bad, please!

Bolt Thrower were great...who were the other guys GW signed initially.
I might dl some stuff just so i've got some mp3s to mail to debaser and annoy him.

I had their album when I was about 10. "Here Come The Noise Machines" was my favourite track.

I just listened to it for the pictures :)

Shakey, I'd have thought that you would have the D-Rok album. It says here (http://www.pemcom.demon.co.uk/queen/cameo/) that two songs featured members of Queen.

Ahh, Red Planet Blues, what a classic.

Never actually listened to either.
You'll have to brig over your albums next time you are round.

Weird site...I wonder who it was who worked on Anita Dobsons songs?

Hale and Pace?
Mel Smith?

did they never work with proper musucians at all?

I think I actually still have the tape somewhere. IIRC it had the mighty 'Rok on one side and Madonna's Immaculate Collection on the other. Strange combo.

Having conducted extensive Bolt Thrower research: No, they aren't that bad. Nightwish are in general much more lyrical, lighter more beautiful sound, and plus they don't suck.

As i recall, Sabbat were another of the GW signed bands. My cowie is into both of them, they're pretty boring i'd say.

Type O Negative are much more interesting.

Actually if anyone still cares, I bought their album Wishmaster, which I am told is their best, and it is amazing. Better than any of the bands I mentioned above.
And to distance them from the Bolt Throweresque dross, they are power metal, but not the fantasy epic variety that Rhapsody are. It is more Rock Opera as Asher suggested. The vocalist has an amazing operatic voice, the rhythms and pattern of the music are derived from classical music, and its basically a direct descendant of classical music into the rock/metal. And they rock.

I should point out when up i went to see a friend of mine she had a lot of their albums. They were really good. Definately liked them. Rock opera is a good description.

Besides the obvious, this group used to do a lot of concerts here, proportionally, and MTV once thought it'd be nice to follow them to Athens and do a little special on them. That was some years ago when there was some kind of metal show on MTV with Vanessa Wirweeksomething, memory is sketchy.

Everything seemed like it was going to be a nice broadcasting but of course, they didn't take into account some things.

So when Manowar (lol) came to play they didn't have a drummer or their drummer was injured or something. So the drummer sat on his sit and pretend to play when actually they had a... drum machine playing and he just moved his arms around for effect pretending he was playing.

When the crowd, consisting mainly of pimple ridden adolescents, came to the realization that it was a drum machine, they started throwing whatever they had in front of them at the band with all the MTV cameras recording.

If that was not enough Vanessa Wirweeksomething thought it would be nice to get on stage just before the show start and announce the band. The crowd started chanting "Vanessa kateva sti poutsa mas aneva" and since her Greek was obviously a bit rusty, she thought it must mean something exotic and flattering 'cause she just stood there smiling confidently.

Rumour has it she became mightly pissed when later on she discovered that the chant meant "Vanesa come down and climb on our dicks". There goes the enchantment....

All in all a disastrous undertaking for everyone involved :D Manowar only dared to come back once after that and MTV had to do some heavy editing
