http://www.gnod.net/

Seems the creator of this site has expanded on the theme that Amazon uses, namely the "if you like this, then maybe you'll like this as well" motiff.
I plugged in my three psuedo favorite musical acts and it suggested The Strokes and The White Stripes (I think) as well as two others that I do indeed enjoy as well.
It also covers film, books and websites.
Pretty cool...since I'm always looking for new bands but don't want to stray too far from my comfort zone, generally.

I put in Alice in Chains, At the Drive-In and Rage against the machine and got out Soundgarden, who I do like but not much frikkin use.
Said I liked it it suggested Pearl Fucking Jam
Said I didn't like it
Suggested Smashing Pumpkins
Said I liked it
Suggested Nine Inch Nails
Said I liked it
Suggested Marilyn Manson
Said I didn't like it
Suggested A Perfect Circle

Got me to the first band I didn't know!

Blind Melon Going to check them out now. Have heard of them before so I probably will like them.

That is very clever.

I did the books one and typed ernest hemingway, j g ballard and graham greene and it suggested j k huysmans, author of one of my favourite books of all time, a rebours. Strangely i was going to put in husymans' name as one of my authors but didn't think the site would know him :D

OK now I understand why it said Chilli Peppers after I said I didn't know Blind Melon.

They sound shit.

Similar experience to Funkodrom. Typed in Amelie, got back loads of films that are good but I have already seen. And why did it recommend Memento and Minority Report?

King_Ghidra
16-04-2003, 15:56:18
Well obviously the database needs to expand, that's why you're just seeing stuff you already know. Is there a way for users to add other suggestions to the site? Hmm..let me look...

Sean
16-04-2003, 15:58:21
Apparently High Fidelity and The City of Lost Children are really similar.

Funkodrom
16-04-2003, 16:02:36
It doesn't say they are similar, it says you might like one if you like the other.

Sean

Fair point, I misread that.

Funkodrom

I did an experiment

I put in Jethro Tull, Emperor and Beethoven

Mozart - Dislike
Mayhem - Dislike
Darkthrone - Like
Enslaved - Dunno
Satyricon - Dislike
Burzum Never heard of these guys!

I think it will be great for authors...often hard to find similar authors without word of mouth. I typed in John Fante and got Dan Fante, who may be his son...just from the title of the books he's written I think I'll like him. Also some French wanker whose excerpts seemed very depressing, like Sarte, maybe.
I haven't figured out what they want with the website engine though...any of you?
But it will suggest interesting sites, it appears. Just not in relation to anything you've entered?

BigGameHunter

Plus, the "map" they do for music and authors and film is kind of cool, don't you think? I like how they swim around at first.

Sean

I thought you were talking about the map at first :o. It’s far cooler.

Huh?

Isn't Blind Melon the band where the singer OD'd a few years back? Yeah...they had like two popular songs. I thought the guy had an annoying voice.

I downloaded snippets of 2 songs and decided they were shit.

Kewl. I'm gonna try all of 'em.

Music: Based on (just to fuck with it) The Kinks, Missy Elliott and The Paragons, I got Eve (-), The Monkees (-), Love (+), Arthur Lee (+), 13th Floor Elevators (+), Mandra Gora Lightshow Society (?), Coldfinger (?), The Zombies (+), Hollies (-, I was getting tired of 60s bands), Animals (-, ditto), Pere Ubu (+, how the fuck did it make that leap?), Gillian Welch (+, kewl), end of cycle.

Books: Based on (randomly) Michail Bulgakov, Terry Pratchett and Lord Byron, it got me Zazie (?), Douglas Adams (+), J.R.R. Tolkien (-), Isaac Asimov (-), Neil Gaiman (+), Arthur C Clarke (-, Aaargh, I don't like Sci-Fi!), Frank Herbert (-), Stephen King (-), Orson Scott Card (-), Neal Stephenson (-, this is getting ridiculous!), Anton Lavey (?), end of cycle. I should have gone with my original hunch and put in Agatha Christie as my "light" read.

Movies: Based on Hannah and Her Sisters, Barry Lyndon and Vertigo, it got me Fannie and Alexander (-), Rear Window (+), North by Northwest (+, I have a feeling I'm stuck on the Hitchcock trail now), Rebecca (-, yup! Let's get rid of the buggers), Funny Girl (-, Aaargh, Aaargh, Aaargh), Gorky Park (+, Great book, haven't seen the film but I'll push it on principle), My Fair Lady (-), Lone Star (?, although I do know it but I haven't seen it), The Mosquito Coast (?), Niagra (?), Aber Los Ojos (?), end of cycle.

Web: after "feeding" it Counterglow, it got me a bunch of random links I didn't feel like clicking. Er.

Right, I'm bored of this, lemme pick sets of three bands I really, really hate and see how long it takes it to find a band I kinda like.

David Sneddon, Yes, Tool: 2. Nine Inch Nails, immediately after Rush.

ABBA, Metallica, The Doves: 7. Aretha Franklin.

Initials: The Miracles, Modern Lovers, Barrington Levy. Weird Paul (?), Esquivel (?), Giant Sand (?), Calexico (+), Howe Gelb (?), Polar (?), Op8 (?), Wildtype (?), Readymade (?), Gram Parsons (+), Freakwater (?), Blasters (?), Dave Alvin (?), end of cycle.

The Hives (?)

Blind Melon's first album evokes hazy rose-tinted memories of the summer between the 5th year and lower 6th at school. Lots of sitting around smoking loads of weed and pulling foxy chicks, they were great days. I might listen to it later.

Anyone know any of the bands it recommended me (except Calexico and Gram Parsons) that second time I did it seriously? I think I better do a third serious round. This time: All obscure bands!

Earth Quake
Don Drummond
DJ Screw

Dark Side of the Moog (Bloody hell. Is that what I think it is? If it is it has nothing in common with any of the listed artists. ?) Sigma7 (?), Ash Ra Tempel (?), Yelworc (?), Shadows (-), Joe Bonamassa (?), Allan Stivell (?), Salad (?), Sonia Dada (?), Pantychrist (?, cool name though), Waterlilies (?), Pat Metheny (?), Duncan Brown (?), Bouncing Souls (?), end of cycle.

So, er, I guess it didn't know any of those, eh?

Hmmm...not so electronicy as depeche mode, think twee fragile indie kids and bittersweet songs about relationships.

that pretty much says it all.

Hmm, put in Smashing Pumpkins, Dashboard Confessional and Muse, and got back
Saves the Day (? - until I downloaded some songs, and realised these were the guys from LWP3),
The Get Up Kids(?),
alkaline trio(?),
Jimmy Eat World (- only just, but I'm fed up of this bland middle-of-road stuff, plus I'm glad to have finally heard of someone), .
Juliana Theory (+),
Ataris(-),
Weezer(+)
The Benjamins(tee hee)
more neverheardofstuff

Hey! I purchased "Elephant" by the White Stripes, based on this site's suggestion.
I have to say it is pretty good, but the guy strikes me as a bit of a pretentious asshole...maybe it was from his liner notes or something...but the music is pretty good. I don't imagine they play live or anything, as there are only two of them.
A London sired band?

Debaser
21-04-2003, 15:33:58
They are from Detroit, and they are great live.

Scabrous Birdseed
21-04-2003, 15:36:59
They're brilliant live. One of the best live acts of the new milennium I think. You should see him tearing up Robert Johnson's "Stop Breaking Down Blues" on his acoustic guitar, it was brilliant!
