It seems simple. Right-click on the menu panel, and select "delete this panel" from the context menu. I did it. I logged out. I typed startx, and the panel was back. It keeps coming back even when I type gnome-save-session before logging out. Is it possible to get rid of the menu panel? If so, how? If not, well, all I can say is that KDE won.

It's a test. Only people who are willing to improve the GNOME source are allowed to use it.

Unless they believe that creating something you can't get rid of is an improvement. But I'm not even willing to make GNOME worse.

If that's the case, they've stolen too much from Windows.

Who stole their approach from Apple. Though by now, even Apple allows users to pretty much change everything without too much pain. Or that's what I hear anyway. :)

Seriously, I like the way the GNOME settings have been simplified. Not too much from GNOME 1.4 is missing. But the menu panel problem is too silly to believe. If anybody is so stupid that they can't figure out how to put it back, they shouldn't be using computers. I couldn't find that much on Google that was helpful....

GNOME stays. I will use it as a library. :)
