Is there a textfile or something (I think there was in 9x), or is there a function in the API, or what?

root window image?

Do you mean the bootup screen? Or the login screen?

The... the background desktop bit. When you're using the OS in everyday fashion.

You want to change the desktop background?

Right click, go to Properties, select the Desktop tab...

I have a right mouse button?! This PC stuff is so much more advanced than my old Mac!

I forgot that caveat. I want to set the background from a Python script. I just need to know how XP expects people to tell it to use a new background image, from non-OS software. For example, how Opera would do it when you right-click on an image and select "use image as desktop background".

Oh no!

A windows question and I don't know the answer. :(

My first guess is that you'd need a Python extention capable of talking to Windows objects.

I haven't found anything relevent yet, but I found this: "KDE would probably be easier to maintain if it was say, written in Python."

There are some COM objects you can use. One of those is for the Desktop, and that has a property off it detailing the background. I think that is how most of the wallpaper changers get to it, but I'm just taking a guess based on some stuff I read long ago.

Oo, oo, I found a guy who wrote a Python script to do just this! He doesn't have it up on his website, but I've emailed him.

Did you get an answer? I could use this.

Ah, found something. WinCPL (http://www.agmweb.ca/Scripts/) seems to work.

Only it sets the background to stretch and I can’t find a way to set it to center.

Yeah, he used WinCPL. I haven't gone back to that project, though, so I'm not familiar with it yet.
