View Full Version : LWP 4 first article discussion

It seems there are 52 tracks on the compilation. 26 on each CD - Sean said we could review 8 on weeks 1 and 4, 9 on the others. So I assume that's what he meant.

How many reviewers are there? I know there are some non-submitters who wanted to be reviewers? That will have some bearing on the number of tracks per week.

I suggest the following format for individual track reviews. Each reviewer should send a PM to the current week's reviewer (on week 1 that would be me) with a brief review of each track that is up for review that week.

They should also send a guess of whos track they think it was.

If it is their own track they should state that, I'll then send them everyone elses comments to respond to and put the article together.

Comments?

Correctomundo, Mr Funkodrom. Each segment is somewhere around the 20-25 minute mark, as well.

Starting a new thread did wonders for the discussion.

Good to see you gave it more than 10 mins. ;)

Debaser

I think a guess at the end on each mini-review would be good. eg:

Debaser Says: This track was utter shit. Clearly who ever picked this must think they're pretty funny, wasting my time in such a childish manner. If i never hear this song again it'll be too soon. Debasers Guess: The Shaker

Having the guesses in a different section just overcomplicates thing in my opinion.

I'll design and make some icons, I have a cool theme in mind. Do we need 6?

The Shaker

OK, make the reviewer and guess bold, like so.

Debaser: this track was utter shit. Clearly who ever picked this must think they're pretty funny, wasting my time in such a childish manner. If I never hear this song again it'll be too soon. Guess: The Shaker.

That way lazy buggers can scan the reviews just looking to see who guessed what.

Scabrous Birdseed

Just at the bottom, or italicised?

The Shaker
Debaser is right, but he's also wrong, wrong, wrong. This is a cover of classic Neil Sedaka song "Calendar Girl" by eighties Hair-Metal band Whitesnake, and it's utterly, utterly brilliant.

Another suggested convention: names of songs in double quotes, names of albums in italics. Oh, and I ran all my articles through Autoformat in word, so as to make quotes nice and curly, but that's far from essential... although having a convention to do it either way might be meaningful. If you do it, remember to turn the "*text* into bold" switch off, otherwise Iain's user name gets fucked up.

I love being awkward. :)

Funkodrom
19-03-2003, 14:24:58
Word?

Oh god, I'm not putting the articles anywhere near Word. Normal quotes are fine.

Debaser
19-03-2003, 14:27:10
What's wrong with Word?

Provost Harrison
19-03-2003, 18:36:25
It's manufactured by the evil empire of Microsoft...

Sean
19-03-2003, 18:37:11
Nothing at all.

If you do somethign in Word and Save as HTML, please at the very least run it through this (http://www.textism.com/resources/cleanwordhtml/) first.

Would it be possible to do a vB code -> HTML converter for posting the articles? I’m sure that Nav could add that to the admin interface.

Another suggested convention: names of songs in double quotes, names of albums in italics.
1) Single quotes!
2) Why not have them both styled the same? It is pretty obvious from the context which is which.

I suggest instead of italicising the comment from the person whose song it actually is, we should put a <hr> in and then their bit styled as normal.

Normal quotes are fine.
They aren’t quotes. Besides, I was under the impression that CG style for articles was to have curly quotes, or is that just because everyone uses Word?

*End Is Forever*
19-03-2003, 18:45:07
Does anyone else think that the "guesses" rather render the "without prejudice" bit a little redundant?

Scabrous Birdseed
19-03-2003, 19:44:46
It's not always clear which is which between albums and singles. I know that during my time at the student newspaper (where we use this convention) I've had to look up the single-or-albumness of several names that were incorrectly formatted.

Single quotes look like you're making a reference to something short you've made up yourself, Sean 'I read Fowler' McGivern or something.

Sean
19-03-2003, 21:46:46
Surely album/single doesn’t matter in this context, though? If it is from a single or an EP then you can say that as well.

Er, it’s hardly just Fowler that recommends single quotes, although he is a handy and authorative reference.

Scabrous Birdseed
19-03-2003, 21:59:38
I keep writing singles when I mean songs. Sorry.

But I mean, something like this:

In 1990, Alpha Blubber released Morning Sun in Ethiopia to almost universal acclaim. After that the quality of their production declined. Not a songle song of theirs has really appealed to me since the days of Cherryade Junkie, released in 1991.

Are those albums or songs?

Sean
19-03-2003, 22:02:01
Fair point, but that is just unclear writing.

Resource Consumer

OK. So can someone post an exact example of the required submission format and I'll try and get my reviews out before I go on Saturday.

Funkodrom
20-03-2003, 10:07:28
Please submit your reviews to me with NO FORMATTING! I'd rather do it myself from scratch than modify a load of different formats.

RC: Review format. Send your reviews of the first 8 songs to me in a PM like this:

Track 1
This track was utter shit. Clearly who ever picked this must think they're pretty funny, wasting my time in such a childish manner. If I never hear this song again it'll be too soon.
Guess: The Shaker.

Track 2
This is one of my tracks

Track 3
This track is the best song I've ever heard. The person who submitted it is clearly a talented musician as well as a wonderful person who is probably great in bed.
Guess: Funkodrom

etc.

Resource Consumer
20-03-2003, 10:12:23

When I say "run thrugh Word" I don't mean "let Word generate the HTML". It's good to run it through a standard word processor to check for spelling mistakes and stuff, and you can always write in the tags manually there too.

What's the deal with reviewing? What do I have to do?

Funkodrom
20-03-2003, 14:19:13
Listen to the song. Decide what you think of it. Write a few sentences about it. Guess who you think might have submitted it.

Read the old LWP articles if you need more idea.

Mr Bas, how long will you need after next Saturday? Can you get them in by the wednesday after that?

Mr. Bas

Bad review + guess = a great way to get at someone. Or, even better, you give it a good review and they give it a bad review, because it isn’t theirs.

The only problem i have with this guessing malarkey is that i have absolutely no idea what the music taste of RC, Mr. Bas and many others is. Combine this with the fact there is stuff on there that doesn't really fit into any nice easy genres and you have a situation where I don't really feel comfortable making a guess.

Funkodrom
24-03-2003, 09:44:35
Don't worry about it, too much, I doubt anyone will get insulted. From the stuff coming in so far, it's going to be the funniest part of the reviews, don't forget they don't really know your music tastes either. We've got 4 reviews in so far and we've already got a couple of situations where someone doesn't like a track and someone else thinks it was by them. :D

I really haven't got a clue about most of them either.

So you're supposed to guess what the song is AND who selected it?

You guys....

Scabrous Birdseed
25-03-2003, 21:12:09
Nah, guessing what the song is is usually... difficult. I only recognise 3 songs that aren't mine plus a couple of artists, and even that's more than with LWP3. Sure, you might show off your knowledge of obscure musical genres in the review somewhere ("This mid-nineties pseudo-progressive Deep-House piece is clearly..." or "This song is clearly from late 1968 to early 1969" or "I usually like stuff produced by Adrian Sherwood, and his characteristic touches are all present, but..."), but generally a normal evaluation is well enough. You know, how do you feel about the song, how does it compare to stuff you usually listen to, whatever.

Mr. Bas
25-03-2003, 21:17:01
Well, you're just supposed to give your opinion on the song, and guess who submitted it. Guessing the actual songs would (at least for me) far too difficult, given the relative obscurity of a lot of the artists involved.

PM with reviews sent, BTW.

Scabrous Birdseed
25-03-2003, 21:24:42
There's nothing realtive about it! I think all of us have picked at least one song that is actually, genuinely, obscure. :)

Highlights of my set include: recent single from really, really obscure third-world country, album track from extremely minor old album that completely bombed on release.

Sean
25-03-2003, 21:34:16
Highlights of mine include a track I thought was nailed-on obscure, until Sneak joined. I shall say no more.

I know some tracks/artists from friends listening to the CD, but if I mention that then I’ll attribute it.

Note for compilers: I am using ` as an opening quote and ' as a closing quote/apostrophe, because Word can convert these to curly quotes. Last time SB left those as they are, which is just ugly.

Also, any high-bit characters could do with entity encoding, to avoid trouble. For instance, when system resources are low IE seems to replace them with characters from other alphabets. Also also, Netscape 4, in its eternal suckiness, gets the normal entity references wrong. Please use this resource: http://www.inet.hr/~tsereg/en/charent.html#ch1_2_4

(Yes, I know you’ll all ignore this, but it matters to me.)

Scabrous Birdseed
27-03-2003, 11:38:42
If you run it through Word to spell check any changes you make will be in curly quotes anyway. I swear, it's easier just to leave curly quotes and non-curly quotes as they are, then run the "autofromat" function with all the top ones and the ** one turned off.
