CM4 Demo is now available.

"Sports Interactive has today released a playable beta demo of Championship Manager 4, which is currently scheduled for release in Europe next month. The demo weighs in at a little under 30MB and can be downloaded from the official Sports Interactive Web site(link: http://www.sigames.com/ )."

Have fun you CM lovers!

Thanks. I had been following this for a while but then they went through the procedure of releasing the demo through CM magazine (bastard hubris if you ask me) and I thought there would be nothing available for us plebs until release (AFAIK late this month inthe UK).

Gooooooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaal

30 meg is pretty reasonable! Thanks Darkstar.

apparently the visual part of it (where you see your team move on the field) is not available in the demo

so I'll wait for the final version...

Oh well.

My suspicion is that it is there - at least judging from some of the comments on the sigames forum

"In the demo, players are able to assume control of any side in the English league in a quick-start game. A number of options are disabled in the demo, though, including the ability to arrange and cancel friendly matches, view matches in full, and save highlights. The demo also doesn't feature any sound effects or background pictures, but these really have no impact on the gameplay whatsoever. "

:hmm: maybe 'watch matches in full' is something else. Anyway, some of you will try it, so let us know...

Resource Consumer

Well it does show highlights at times in the 2d view although I admit that it does not show in full.

I am playing it at work at the moment - I would say the jury is still out here. It is probably unfair to judge on a beta but it is slow as hell and the interface is, IMHO, a retrograde step from CM3...

Darkstar
04-03-2003, 23:00:19
Glad to see you putting that work space to good use...

All I know is... when companies use the word beta, I would say don't think that everything you see in it is firmly set and carved in stone.

And if you don't like what you see, send them an email, and tell them why. Don't just say 'The interface suck dock piers!' Tell them why it sucks dock piers. With enough reasonable bitching from their future customers, they may decide they need to change it. Seriously.

Well, I have already on the Sigames forum. Interestingly, though, the interface is skinable so this may not be such a problem.

Of course, some of the problem is plain unfamiliarity...

maroule
05-03-2003, 08:20:24
unfamiliarity? yeah, right, you've been playing this system for, like, only 10 years and stuff... (rolleyes the Californian teenager way)

Resource Consumer

Nah. The interface seems to be a big change from the CM3 series which is what I am really used to.

Gah. I missed it; was occupied with, among other things, Europa 1400. Might give it a go this evening.

Interested in your views on this one, Sean.

Sean

Tried it briefly. RC is bang on, the interface is disgusting. The alternate skin just changes the look, not how it works. Aside from the confusing, deeply-nested menus, the worst thing is the absence of the back button at the bottom of the screen. I used that all the time in 01/02, and now instead of finding a big bar at one edge of the screen, I have to go over to the side to hit a relatively small button. I didn’t even get as far as the first game, because of the interface and because Jay-Jay Okocha is under-rated.

That criticism could be spectacularly ill-founded, but the game has specatcularly failed to grab me so far.

removing the back button seems to be a very stupid oversight

as for jay-jay, come on, he blows hot and cold like so many others of his ilk - it's not as though he was all that amazing for psg either

There is now a news ticker along the bottom. A news ticker! And even when you have read news, it still scrolls across the bottom. What happened to the old flashing button in the bottom left?

As I said, the back button is there, in its secondary position on the left menu (like anyone used it there before).

No disagreement. That is why they have the mental stats, like consistency and determination.

Having looked at his stats again, they seem fair, but other players are a bit dodgy. Technically, is Lee Hughes as good as Sylvain Wiltord, who is less good than Lauren? Is Richard Ord (yes, him) a better crosser of the ball than Nolberto Solano?

Sean

AAGH! Everyone, tell me how you would go through the process of selecting a 4-4-2 Arsenal team. Which order would you select the players in?

I should probably say some good things. Match odds, star players (like Makaay) are listed as on other clubs’s shortlists, even when the player is unavailable. Better-looking and more detailed tactics screen (can set Sheringham to do the traditional near post flick, por ejemplo). More detailed player info (how happy they are, etc.). The supporters let you know their thoughts (at the start they are disappointed that an unknown is in charge).

am i right in saying that the way champ man stats are generated is not set in stone but that each player has a certain random element to his stats?

i.e. the jay jay in my game may be better or worse than the one in yours?

Sean
05-03-2003, 17:09:57
Yeah, that’s true. You get used to assessing players at a glance, so when they change the stats screen it comes as a bit of a shock.

Sean
05-03-2003, 17:11:22
Oh wow, the match view is great.

Sean
05-03-2003, 17:14:50
On the stats thing: Henry’s Technique is 13. Leee Hughes’s is 15. :clueless:.

The match view is fantastic so far, though. Saw Henry make a great run down the left to draw the defender away and Bergkamp nod the cross home at the near post.

Humm... back button. Escape button? If they keyed the escape button to do that functionality (close current window), they may have decided they didn't need such an "old fogey" user interface element like a big, honking, easy to find/click back button. I know from all my various gaming habits, that I work on wearing out that escape button very much.

Just a thought. I've seen that sort of thinking plenty enough in software work often enough.

Right, but that may not be the way it runs in the demo - players could be hard coded there (maybe)

Just saw something truly great. If a player is recommended as an excellent signing by your scout (highest accolade possible), then if you go to that player, Information, Scout Reports, it says they have ‘useless talent’.

Darkstar
06-03-2003, 20:44:44
LOL! So the scouts change their minds quickly, do they? ;)

I've been tempted plenty. I just haven't shopped around for the game. Decided I'd wait on CM4. I hear it might even make it to the US market. ;)

And I keep posting the Championship Manager news items here because I know that there are posters here interested in it. If I knew there were a few posters interested in The Sims, I'd post more news about them.

I had a good go with this last night. This game is well away from release, I'm really surprised they released a demo based on beta code.

I was playing as Arsenal v Liverpool in the Community Shield? At half time the scores suddenly became 3-0 (with match report to back it up), mid-way through the second half the scores suddenly became 0-2. By the end of the game I'd seen no goals. The commentary said the result was 3-2. err...
