And tell me the secrets of Tony Hawk 3. I finally got it yesterday. I'm not very good so far. My highest score is like 31,000 and I can't complete very many goals.

Teach me the ways...the tao of Tony.

Yesterday I got A 600,000 point combo, but that was on Tony 4 so it doesn't count.

Practice!

Er...

Practice!

Tony 3 has loads of really long grinds on it with lots of gap bonuses. On the first level you can rack up huge scores by grinding round the outside of the level. Secret to doing long grinds and not falling off, whilst racking up big points, is to jump regularly in the grinds and spin as you are doing them. Concentrate on learning the big grinds, then practice jumping off the grinds and landing into a manual (down then up or up then down on the direction pad just before you land) then if you can, steer the manual until you get to a ramp and do a jump trick. Revert when you get down.

That's it. Massive scores are us.

Mainly practice though.

Oh and The Shaker is a bastard.

Venom
03-02-2003, 14:12:52
I can grind pretty good, though my sideways landings are becoming something of a legend. I keep trying to grind the molten metal pit in the foundry (since it's one of the goals) but I must be doing it wrong as it never gives me credit for it.

Also, how do you splash the manager in the foundry?

Funkodrom
03-02-2003, 14:14:32
You have to grind the actual molten metal bucket, not the pit in the ground.

The manager is on the right hand side of the level (from where you start) when it cycles through the goals at the beginning it shows you where he is. I think that there is a switch on one of the rails next to him that you have to grind to knock him in.

The Shaker
03-02-2003, 14:14:44
The molten bucket is a shitter,
basically you have to jump onto it when it's tipping and grind the rails that are down its side. Took me ages.

Splash the manager...grind the rail next to him I think.

Funkodrom
03-02-2003, 14:16:27
To grind the bucket. Wait until the alarms start sounding to tell you that the metal is pouring, then go to the ramps that are directly behind the molten metal pit, jump between the two ramps and hold Triangle to clip the bucket. then try and land it.

Funkodrom
03-02-2003, 14:17:18
HARR HARR, Shakey you don't have to grind down the rails at all, just clip the bucket.

The Shaker
03-02-2003, 14:25:45
The rails count as thye bucket and are easier. Only a loser would try and just clip the bucket.
What site did you get that explanation from anyway?

Funkodrom
03-02-2003, 14:29:24
Clip the rail, clip the bucket, same difference.

I did it by complete fluke.

The Shaker
03-02-2003, 14:47:34
I know, cos at the time you couldn't tell me how you did it :D

So what site was the explanation from then...and does it have some Tony 4 stuff on it?

Funkodrom

OG.

I just wrote it myself. K_G linked a site with good playstation tips here a while back but I forget what it was now.

Venom

Ahhhhh I just have to hit the rail. I see!

Vincent
03-02-2003, 15:03:22
To get some good combos you got to know the levels quite well. Also you get fewer points if you use the same tricks, so use grinds an jumps. Halfpipes are quite good to get some good points and for practising.

Funkodrom
03-02-2003, 15:04:06
Of the bucket, not the pit. You have to get some air to be able to catch it.

Good tip is to watch the little movies of the goals at the beginning of each run.

Venom
03-02-2003, 15:26:14
I also watch my replys to check my timing and my line up. Helps me a bunch.

Venom
05-02-2003, 17:49:38
My skills grow. I can now pull 15,000 point tricks fairly easily and my high score is 75,000. Still can't grind that damn bucket.

Funkodrom
05-02-2003, 19:34:15
And soon you'll be in the airport pulling off 150,000 point tricks!

Venom
05-02-2003, 20:07:45
Is there a way to score massive points on aerials? I know grinds to switches to 50-50s and all that are massive scores but I want the 900.

The Shaker
05-02-2003, 20:28:49
JUmp 3 tricks+spinning, land revert manualto ramp jump 3 tricks and spin etc etc etc ad infinitum.
grinding is for wimps.

Venom
05-02-2003, 20:36:54
I want to do more big air tricks but grinds are the only way I can current score masses of points at one time.

Vincent
05-02-2003, 20:46:40
A matter of practice. I usually get the most points in halfpipes. But it to a LONG time to find out the proper timing (THPS2).

Funkodrom

Funkodrom
06-02-2003, 09:26:40
Yeah, and you get obsessed with what scores you can get as well.

A great way to get even more into the game is to find a friend and start playing Horse with them. The king of the 2 player Tony games.

27,000 point trick. And the only thing left to do at the foundry is grind that goddamn molten bucket. I HATE that bucket.

07-02-2003, 13:16:30
Do the training in the game over and over again with an empty mind until you are one with the game. Soon you will become tony and maybe even start to like some of the terrible music in the game. Feel the flow of the energy and act with purity. You will nourish your shen and with correct gameplay your dan tien will be glowing with four types of yin and yang. Then you will partially understand the tao of tony.

Wait for the horn to sound, go to the ramp where the bucket pours. Jump, hold triangle, clip the bucket, straighten, hold x to land.

Funkodrom
07-02-2003, 13:24:08
It's easier than doing it the 'proper' way.

Venom
07-02-2003, 13:29:54
I've been attacking it like a madman but I must be jumping at the wrong time/angle because triangle doesn't "grab" anything.

I did move to the Canadian level to try and get more stat points but I currently suck at that one. Well it's more like I'm just wanking around exploring the level and seeing where the goals are and how to get to each place.

Vincent
07-02-2003, 13:31:32
Jesko, Finn Willi's little brother, always wands me to kick down the pissing guy from the ramp. It works.

Yeah, I think it has to be actually pouring to get it.

Funkodrom
07-02-2003, 13:44:34
Excellent.

It does help with better stats though. Canada is a bit of a bitch. I came back to a lot of those goals later. Just did enough to unlock the next level.

Venom
07-02-2003, 13:47:05
I just unlocked it last night before I quit. Rio is next, but I want to try and get 1 more goal on Canada before I move on. I want to impress all 5 skaters. So far I can only get 4.

Venom
07-02-2003, 13:58:32
It's quite fun. And strangely addictive. I start playing thinking I'll only play for 30 minutes or so, and then it's been an hour and a half and I'm missing Buffy.

I'm keeping it secret for now, so when I have people over and we play I can destroy them.

The spinning is tricky, the rest is fine. WASD for movement, Numpad 2 for jump, Numpad 8 to grind, 4 and 6 to do tricks.

Spinning is done using 1 and 3 (180 degree increments) or 7 and 9 (continuous fast), but since I rarely spin and do tricks at the same time it's okay.

Er, should I be spinning and doing tricks at the same time?

Yes dammit! Spin like a madman.

Funkodrom
07-02-2003, 15:29:15
I hold down spin continuously whilst I'm in the air doing tricks just trying to straighten up for landings. The points for each trick multiply the longer you spin them. Biggest score I saw for an individual trick was probably Shakey's 1080 Jango Jet Pack.

Venom
07-02-2003, 15:32:31
A 1080!?!? Shit. I can barely, barely pull a 720.

Scabrous Birdseed
07-02-2003, 15:33:18
Maybe I should remap continuous spin to the space bar and Left CTRL.

Funkodrom
07-02-2003, 15:40:54
900s are possible with full stats. Jango Jump Pack is a special move in THPS4 that launches you a bit further into the air with a jet back thruster boost.

Scabby, you only need to use continuous spin in one direction. I only ever use the right spin button 'cause it's easiest to use on the PS2 controller.

Scabrous Birdseed

Thank you. I went in and tried it (well, the wallride part- I had opened the secret bit already), couldn't get it to work, and then managed to do it using the "normal" method (special-speed boneless off grassy verge thing).

I just need 4k to open Bullring now. I think geting the SICK! Score in New York and getting a higher-value medal in one of the two competitions should do it. Pity it has a tendency to crash on Skaestreet like half the time (though not, thankfully, well into a run...).

I have entirely completed two of the levels. Man, one of those $50s in School was bloody hard.

Whey hey, I have medalled in all three competitions. Now it wants me to win gold in all three competitions, which doesn't seem too hard in Marseilles (where I've already done it) and Bullring (where just running clockwise along the Bull's path will get you mondo points, I got Silver without really trying), but bloody difficult in Skatestreet because THE DAMN GAME KEEPS CRASHING EVERY TIME I BAIL! Aaargh.

Funkodrom
20-02-2003, 09:19:36
I definitely got 250,000+ on THPS3, you can grind the length of the airport level going down the escalators, do a trick off the ramp at the bottom and start going back up again. Fairly easy way to get at least 100,000 every time.

Vincent

It's especially good in THPS3 onwards because you can build up the special bar as you progress the trick and get to do specials, in 2 you couldn't do specials in Horse.
