The Best of Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band which my brother got me for Christmas.

It's great. (actually by the sounds of it that should probably be :smoke: )

Ah. As good as Frank Zappa?

Funkodrom

Totally different.

Funkodrom

Well totally different to the Zappa stuff I've heard, which isn't much.

Today I've been mostely listening to the fantastic Detroit Cobra's, who sound totally different to how I expected them to. They sound almost Northern Souly.

They sound like they should be a garage band.

They are. They are a 60's style garage pop band (They sound exactly like the band in Quadrophenia who are playing in the disco scene where Jimmy buys loads of speed pills)

Last thing I heart from Don was he's a painter now. Last thing he heard from me was I died. Which is the almost the same thing ...

So, out of curiosity, what bits of Beefheart's career do you like the most? I mean, I personally love the Safe as Milk material, sort of acknowledge Trout Mask Replica and haven't heard much of the later stuff.

It's all good, out of the 16 songs on the album (in chronological order) the first 6 are the best I think.

That'd be early single Diddy Wah Diddy and five tracks off Safe as Milk, right?

Snappy, do you have the Detroit Cobras album "Mink Rat or Rabbit"?

Sage as Milk
Gimme Dat Harp Boy
Handy Horn
Upon the My-O-My
New Electric Ride
Party of Special Things to do

The Detroit Cobras track Debaser sent me is really good.

"Zappa and Beefheart (Don Van Vliet) had been friends since childhood, and had recorded songs together before they each headed off for their solo careers. Zappa was the producer for what many consider to be Beefheart's finest album, Trout Mask Replica, and Beefheart loaned his voice to the track Willie the Pimp on Hot Rats. So it was only a matter of time before the two did a full album together, and it finally came about as a live disc recorded in May, 1975 at the Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin, Texas."

That's why I asked if they were similar.

Yeah I know...

I'd have to hear more Zappa but it doesn't sound the same to me.
