View Full Version : I must be the last person to steal a tank in GTA3.

But I did it. And what fun. :)

I haven't done it yet. Only just got it though.

It's great when you get a wanted rating so the police cars try to ram you off the road. Boom. :D

Congrats Deacon. Now kill man! KILL!!!

I didn't steal the tank, I borrowed it.

Kill is right. :)

Nothing like getting some payback after completing a mission that was made difficult by all the stupid traffic. I've seen goofballs dodge from lane to lane trying to keep me from passing them coming over the bridge.

I discovered that the tank can actually be destroyed. But it does take alot of damage to do it. I make sure to head back to the bribes at my hideout before taking too much damage.

Something else cool is the emergency vehicle crane. Just like the FAQs on the web said, you get permanent icons for each vehicle at the Portland docks if you steal one of each type and take it to the crane. That way, you can get the Tank for free without beating the game, though you do have to unlock the third island to get 6 stars.

I havnt managed to get a fbi car yet - if I manage to get that wanted I normally get stuck on top of a building and if I come down I get shot to pieces - any advice?

If you make your carnage from the top of the big skyscraper in Staunton Island, pretty much everyone gathers at the front (north). The stair points south and there is a fence at the ground level that gives you some cover, so you should be able to jump across and enter the underground car park, where there is a nice Yakuza Stinger for you to escape in. Then you can pick a spot for the fight (or steal the car just as the officers get out, which is probably safer). FBI cars can be repainted as well.

Oh, and you don't absolutely need a 6 star wanted rating to get a tank. I picked up mine from the military weapon outlet in north Staunton. The one there is nearly always locked, but sometimes it isn't. :)

I just used the cheat codes to get a tank. Made certain assassinating missions easier. :)

I stole them by preparing my hideout for a fight with the cops. Staunton is the best hideout. The garage in Portland is too small for a tank. The Shoreside Vale hideout gives the cops too many directions of approach when you're retreating to get armor, ammo, bribes, etc.

You get bribes by doing vigilante missions. Health by doing paramedic missions. They are permanent, and all you have to do to regenerate them is leave your hideout briefly and come back. I also got some body armor by picking up 50 hidden packages. Since you get other things too on the way to 50, you should have grenades, a shotgun, an uzi, etc. The M-16 and the rocket launcher are my personal favorites. There's a free M-16 somewhere in the parking lot at the southwest corner of Staunton Island.

Getting to 5 stars is easy enough if you use your ears to identify where threats are coming from and attack with speed. It's also good to keep moving. And to know the minimum safe distance for an exploding vehicle.

I don't like to fight the FBI or National Guard in the open because they try to run you over before gunning you down. I try to get them to come into my hideout, or I hang near the opening so I can retreat quickly.

It's good to turn the turret of the tank around to use it as a sort of jet propulsion.

Shut up you bastards, I don't have any time to play this. Best weapon I've got is an Uzi.

Still in Portland, Funko? Not too many great weapons there, certainly not in great quantities. Though you can find a cool flamethrower if you search well.

The Uzi is quite OK. The clips are a bit small, but you can sprint with it and fire it from vehicles.

28-01-2003, 09:27:45
Yeah. I haven't done many missions yet, only 7 or 8 probably. I only got it at christmas and I've been mad crazy busy with band stuff and Tony Hawks 4. (which is a bit more of a social game).

I've done quite a bit of just randomly wandering around wasting people though, which is more fun than some of the missions.

The Uzi is classic drive-by style.

The early missions are the usual familiarization stuff.

If you like (semi-)random acts of violence, try some of the rampages. Most of them are very tough, but they do let you temporarily get your hands on some advanced weaponry.

The most ridiculous one I have attempted yet was to kill 20 Yardies with a rocket launcher. That was not the least successful one, though; that honour belongs to the attempt to destroy 10 cars in drive-by shootings. Cars take squillions of Uzi shots to kill, and do not exactly remain stationary either.

Most fun was taking out 25(?) Yakuza (and quite a number of innocent bystanders) with Molotov cocktails. :D

Story mode is beaten. I sure hope Vice City gets ported to the PC.

I believe an FAQ somewhere said that tank gun kills count as drive-by shootings.

The two missions where I found the tank to be useful for winning the game were Escort Service and The Exchange. The Exchange is difficult if you go directly to the enemy after the first battle. But it's almost a cinch if you go to your hideout to pick up guns and then drive to the enemy base in a tank. I think maybe the bulletproof Patriot was intended to be used for this mission, but it doesn't protect or destroy as well as the Rhino.

Now my next grand criminal scheme is to get all the different car types to the Import/Export garages.

And the Dodo is a big let-down. Note to developers: If you're gonna put a flyable aircraft in the game, make it flyable!!

29-01-2003, 10:00:18
It is flyable (but only just) Have managed to crash it into the control tower once

29-01-2003, 11:45:39
To make the Dodo fly in GTA3 you have to keep the nose pointing down slightly. push your stick forward a little on take off, the Dodo should bounce a couple of times and then take off. Don't be tempted to pull the plane up because it will stall. If you are gentle, you can fly indefinately.

Rampages? How do I get to do those?

29-01-2003, 14:28:09
Answer ringing telephones.

29-01-2003, 14:38:36
Ok, I haven't noticed any telephones yet.

Pick up skull-shaped icons. They are usually hidden away in dark/narrow alleys or other slightly out-of-sight places.

The ringing telephones usually get marked on the map, except one, and they give you regular missions.

You can't 100-0 me on this stuff, I don't know enough about it. :D

That was directed at Venom. Might have been an honest mistake, but better be sure.
