They featured the mech Xbox game Steel Battalion in Today\'s Metro (free London paper). It comes with the most ridiculous controller Ive ever seen, plus three pedals to accompany it!

The whole kit & caboodle is due out in the UK on March 28th for around £130.

another gadget that will make you look like a geek and gather dust once you realise the game itself is very average

Venom

Well, that is some complex shit. And there's probably not another game on the planet that you can use it with.

Nav doesn't need a gadget to look like a geek.

130 quids for that clunck of cheap metal and plastic
That would hurt my ass (direct translation of 'ça me ferait mal au cul')

use the other joystick, it looks a lot less painful. ;)

I'm surprised beta hasn't been building something similar in his secret laboratory.

somehow it reminds me of this fantastic quote in Pulp Fiction, when Christopher Walkens gives the young Bruce Willis is father's watch

"The way your Daddy looked at it, that watch was your
birthright. And he'd be damned if
and slopeheads were gonna put their
greasy yella hands on his boy's
birthright. So he hid it in the
one place he knew he could hide
somethin'. His ass. Five long
years, he wore this watch up his
ass. Then when he died of
disentary, he gave me the watch. I
hid with uncomfortable hunk of
metal up my ass for two years.
Then, after seven years, I was sent
home to my family. And now, little
man, I give the watch to you."

Oh you COULD do some outrageous shit with that controller, but no one will.

That's supposed to be a fantastic game, but it's so damn expensive.

There will be at least another game to use it...Capcom is making Steel Battalion 2 to be out in late 2003/early 2004...supposed to have Xbox Live support also.

fantastic? GSpot says :

"In case the $199 price tag didn't clue you in, let's be blunt: Steel Battalion isn't for everyone. What started as a back-burner side project at Capcom has become one of the most ambitious and atmospheric console games ever released. The latest in a seemingly endless flood of mech games for the Xbox, Steel Battalion certainly puts on a fantastic show. Unfortunately, Steel Battalion's gameplay falls short when compared with its flashy presentation, and the result is an amazing showpiece but a less-than-stellar game. "

Gamespot gave it a low score relative to most others (7.3/10). The average based on 19 reviews is 88%: http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/21845.asp

Gamespy said:
Steel Battalion is the most immersive giant-robot game ever made, and Capcom's loving paean to hardcore gamers.
and
I'd recommend Steel Battalion to any giant-robot fan and hardcore gamer even if it was merely a one-shot; Capcom's remarkable achievement in video game artistry should be experienced by anyone with the financial means. As the great sage Ferris Bueller once said, "I must be honest here, I love driving it. I highly recommend picking one up."

Asher never met an X-Box game he couldn't plug relentlessly.

fair enough asher
still, I'll probably play you on Mech assault before I splash so much money on this controller from geekland

You should get Kabuki Warriors, you'd love it.

Venom

You think so? I'm often tempted by the evils of the X. Box I mean. Not the drug. I don't do that crap. Any more.

Let's put it this way:

Out of 18 reviews, the average score for Kabuki Warriors was 30%.

Hell, I've never trusted gamespot reviews since they gave Heavy Gear II a 9.3.

They know little about games, and NOTHING about giant robot games.

It takes 6 different switches/buttons on that monster just to turn on your Mech.

If you want that personal arcade box feel, it sounds like your cup of tea. I love Mech games, but I don't know if I'd pay the cost of the X Box again just for one game controller. And it's a pedal and panel, remember. So you need a table with a TV to waste...

It seems very gimmicky to me... like having a NASCAR race game that requires their special NASCAR Panel and Pedal simulator.

Shining1

Er... like all the steering wheel and pedals sets you can already buy for such games?

Darkstar
21-01-2003, 12:25:35
Difference is that you don't have to have those controllers to play the game, Shining1. I did pick them on purpose.

Extra controllers built specifically for that type of game should be a bonus/optional item, not a requirement.

Venom

It sucks driving cars with regular controllers. Steering wheels make it so much more fun.

Nav

Thats why I'm waiting for TOCA Race Driver on the PC, rather than just buying it for the PS2.

Venom

Get one of those universal steering wheels. They're USB and will work with almost anything I think.

And don't whine about cost. Just do it.
