Been back playing this for a while,
But for some reason i've suddenly gone against my principles and started playing as the French.
And the best bit is the fact I get to annihilate the evil empire-building English...it's really satisfying. I am confused.

burn their colonies to the ground, and take London
like that they'll have decent food 300 years in advance

Funkodrom

You mean the French have already conquered India and China and are bringing us the curry?

Venom

If the French run away long enough, they'll eventually end up in China.

maroule
13-01-2003, 14:38:36

Venom

maroule

Darkstar
13-01-2003, 15:51:33
Hey now, Venom, if it wasn't for the French, the South wouldn't have all that great food and great attitude about sex.

Or so public school taught me. According to that, the French were all godless heathens that thought only the French were real people, and that only theirself counted. That's why they used slaves everywhere, had great food, and had thousands of veneral diseases that they spread inside their incestous relationships. Unlike the good, pious, English who while they had lousy food, had good and moral values and strength, and hence why England conquered the world, and why America is the only true descendants of their Holy Might (as they have fallen off the path).

Isn't public education fascinating?

maroule
13-01-2003, 15:57:54
the english/americans kept their slaves much later than we did, but the rest is true, especially veneral diseases (that we got from banging the perfidious brits)

I have to say, I do very much like EUII.

Damned fine game, but I usually play as the Russians or the Turks.

Shakey - are you playing as a 1492 start? If playing 1419, which statelet do you choose?

The Shaker
13-01-2003, 16:44:48
I think I chose a 1419 start..whatever seemed to be earliest. Though I could be wrong.

I guess it was the france statelet, with ille de france and a couple of other provinces with the whole area at war. Nice and easy property grab.
Since I discovered diplo-annexxing it made the game a lot easier. still not found a use for religion though.

Dyl Ulenspiegel
13-01-2003, 16:46:33
I only played Austria once, then mostly Aragon. I hate the rush for colonies though (and look forward to CK).

"the english/americans kept their slaves much later than we did"

I think France 1848, England 1830s or so ?

Resource Consumer
13-01-2003, 16:47:37
Religion really weighs in when you are an expansionist Russia where you have orthadox, catholic (Karelia at least and some bits of Lithuania) and moslem (both Shia and Sunni) and Pagan.

A bit of converting - Catholics if you expand East and moselms if you expand west - goes a damned long way.
Diplo annexing remives some of the bad boy problems but you need to be a lot more patient then me to do it...

The Shaker
13-01-2003, 16:52:23

very good Dyl, april 1848 for France in its Colonies, and 1833 for England, but we like to remember the previous and ground breaking abolition by the French revolution, esp. by the governor of St Domingue (then French) in 1793. That was later reversed but the seeds were planted.

I played as Tibet once. Managed to conquer a sizeable portion of Asia and was marching on to the borders of Eastern Europe before I got bored. Trouble is that happens when you reload old saved games when things start going bad, the appeal dies a bit cos you know that deep down you just cheated yourself as well as the poor innocent AI computer players.

maroule
14-01-2003, 08:17:44
I played as the Mayas (or was it the incas?) and got bored to death

I then tried with Ethiopia and got bored to death

As for the euro powers, I had done 6 months of EU I (and conquered most of the world with Netherlands in difficult/aggressive) so did not feel going back to it. Hence I bought EU II for nothing

shaker, I'm just getting into CM myself but enough to see that the game has a lot of depth
I played several time the same battle (the Vitarii one, finnish against russians) and started to see some subtelties that had totally escaped me at first, and that had a huge impact (the use of PCs for exemple). I am thrilled and worried to think that I uncovered about 5% of the possibilities of the game.

The Shaker

For my money cmbo is more fun than cmbb - the second one features too much snow and mud and huge open spaces for my sneaky infantry heavy tactics. Give me the close terrain of normandy over the steppes any day. CMBB is too tank dominated for my liking.

ordered mine direct from battefront in the US took about 1-2 weeks (and was quite cheap) you can buy cmbb in the shops without any trouble

Sounds a lot like work.
Scientist have to work hard, and get blamed.
Generals sit around getting fat (they are all really really fat as far as I can tell)
and occasionally order other people to do work.
Much much better :D

maroule
16-01-2003, 11:20:38

The Shaker

Someone you get to dress up like you and pretend to be you...especially when you are going into dangerous situations and want people to shoot the double and not yourself :)

The Shaker
16-01-2003, 11:48:17
or for actors you use shots of someone elses body for close-ups in movies to make you appear more attractive than you actually are.

Tried the demo again though, it's quite hard with no instructions. And no talent.

maroule
17-01-2003, 12:35:29
you shall not drop
stick to it the first few games, although it will probably look we have over sold you this game. It looks quite average (the infantery), simplistic (just a few commands to give) or on the contrary complicated (because as attacker you get slaughtered when you start).

In fact, it's quite engrossing, extremely deep, and very fun to play one vs one by mail.

Beside, LoD never showed up in our league and we need a 4th player we can humiliate. I'd quite like to loose the newbie tag myself, so you're welcome.

Resource Consumer
17-01-2003, 12:41:26
Humiliating the SHaker - why not. Easy to add a 5th player and LoD will participate (eventually)

The Shaker
17-01-2003, 12:42:48
Yeah, I can see there will be a lot of learning to do. It was the same with EU2, I jump in, and after getting nowhere for a whle suddenly discover things like, instructions and tactics :)

I don't mind sitting at the bottom of the league, if only so once in a while I can humiliate people with outlandish ideas that should never work :)

Installed, played a tiny game, suffered a total defeat in 5 rounds.
Apparantly charging towards machine guns results in lots and lots of casualties.

Beta1
20-01-2003, 16:03:25
Ahh young apprentice,

you will learn to forsake the tank rushes and rapid clicks that have brought you victory before, you will not send heavy tanks as scouts because you think they are hard to kill and you will not rely on huge armies of 1 type of unit.

Or you shall be massacred repeatedly.

you will learn combined arms tactics, you will keep your armor behind your infantry, you will remember to smoke gun emplacments before charging them, you will learn to time infantry attacks so your men arrive after the artillery barrage, not before.

And one day you will win.

Then you'll realise the AI is easy compared to playing a human and it will all start again.

Beta1
20-01-2003, 16:04:45
seriously thought a total defeat in 5 turns?

thats dam impressive. surely this must be you attacking the AI, and rushing in head first.

One word - scouts.

And if you want to join in with us lot you feel free, I can add your matches to this round.

Or if you want to get in some practise first (recommended) we can wait for a bit

Stand in line, walk slowly towards machine guns :)

I'm up for joining in this round if you can still do that,

Resource Consumer
22-01-2003, 14:15:28
what is the rarity option?

Shakey - PM me your preferred e-mail...

Beta1
22-01-2003, 14:39:05
Theres an option down the bottom of the QB setup that increases the prices of certain units to reflect how common/rare they were at the time. EG T-34s are very common as are Pnzer3s and 4s so their prices do not change, panthers and tigers were more scarce so their price increases slightly. The real oddballs like the brummbar assault guns and the IS-2s (that probably never saw battle) become even more expensive.

But I think it then gives you more points to play with - otherwise your 2000 point battle would have 3 tanks and a buy with a SMG in it.

Resource Consumer
